๐Ÿ”ฅ MASTERCLASS RECAP โ€“ SESSION 1 ๐Ÿ”ฅ Blue Border Dispatching
Great job to everyone who showed up for Part 1 of the Masterclass! We laid the foundation the RIGHT way. ๐Ÿ’ช
Yesterday we covered:
  • โœ… Understanding equipment types
  • โœ… How load boards actually work
  • โœ… What brokers are looking for
  • โœ… Basic negotiation strategy
  • โœ… How to calculate your target rate
  • โœ… Why margin matters more than โ€œjust booking the loadโ€
If you missed it โ€” the replay is available. Get caught up before the next session so youโ€™re not behind.
๐Ÿ’ฐ HOW TO FIND THE PROPER RATE (Negotiation Breakdown)
This is where dispatchers either WIN or LOSE.
You donโ€™t just call and โ€œask what it pays.โ€
You calculate FIRST.
๐Ÿงฎ STEP 1: Calculate Loaded Miles
Example:
Load is picking up in Dothan, AL
Delivering to Orlando, FL
Letโ€™s say total loaded miles = 400 miles
๐Ÿ“Š STEP 2: Know Your Equipment Target Rate
Every equipment type has a target range.
Example targets (varies by market):
  • Cargo Van: $1.20โ€“$1.80 per mile
  • Box Truck: $1.80โ€“$2.50 per mile
  • Hotshot: $2.00โ€“$3.00 per mile
  • 53โ€™ Dry Van: $2.00โ€“$3.50 per mile
  • Flatbed: $2.50โ€“$4.00 per mile
  • Reefer: $2.75โ€“$4.00 per mile
(Always adjust based on region and demand.)
๐Ÿ’ต STEP 3: Multiply Miles ร— Desired Rate
Letโ€™s say youโ€™re dispatching a HOTSHOT
You want at least $2.50 per mile
400 miles ร— $2.50 = $1,000
That means $1,000 is your MINIMUM goal.
๐ŸŽฏ STEP 4: Build Your Negotiation Cushion
You NEVER open at your minimum.
If you need $1,000โ€ฆ
You negotiate at:
400 miles ร— $2.80 = $1,120
Now you have room.
If broker says:
  • โ€œBest I can do is $1,050โ€ โ†’ You still win.
  • โ€œI can meet you at $1,080โ€ โ†’ Even better.
  • โ€œI can do $1,000 flatโ€ โ†’ You hit your floor.
But if you start at $1,000, you have no leverage.
๐Ÿง  REMEMBER THIS:
โœ”๏ธ Calculate BEFORE you call
โœ”๏ธ Know your carrierโ€™s operating cost
โœ”๏ธ Know your deadhead miles
โœ”๏ธ Always negotiate ABOVE your desired number
โœ”๏ธ Donโ€™t sound desperate โ€” sound confident
๐Ÿ”ฅ NEXT SESSION
In the next class weโ€™re going deeper into:
  • Live load board breakdowns
  • What to avoid when booking
  • How to read between the lines of a load
  • Real broker call examples
  • Profit vs. busy work
Make sure youโ€™re ready.
If you havenโ€™t watched the replay yet โ€” do that TODAY.
Letโ€™s build real dispatchers, not guessers. ๐Ÿ’ผ๐Ÿš›
