When I first started teaching Jiu-Jitsu well let’s back that up even. When I first opened my own Academy in 2017 I would say up until the pandemic my Academy was doing amazing. We had a large kids program a growing adults program things were looking good. It was getting to the point I was about to separate kids classes by belt colors. Then the pandemic hits and we lose almost everyone. We had enough people to keep the bills paid and to barely pay ourselves. Fast forward now a little bit to last year I left a 4200 sq ft facility with showers, locker rooms a huge mat space a huge parking lot in a huge shopping area simply because rent was getting out of control. But I lucked out I had the opportunity to buy a building 12 minutes from my location. I seen the opportunity to invest in myself but to finally build something I could truly say is mine to share with my students. So end of 2025 going into 2026 we moved everyone out of our old location which we were in for almost 8yrs into our current location. Now what did I exchange it for: rent I am no longer renting I no longer have to pay hidden fees like cam fees or taxes on a building I don’t own. I’m saving already around $42k a yr from moving. But what do I have now is a 2,400 sq fr building with locker rooms, 2 smaller but separate mat spaces where I can run multiple classes at the same time which I could t do before. 2 rest rooms which I didn’t have before I only had one. A large parking lot which now I own. A sign at the road which I own as before I had to pay a fee every month to have up. Now I know what your thinking oh you own the building it must be better well it is and isn’t. I still have bills I have to pay mortgage, insurance, payroll, utilities, job supplies, the list is still going on for sure. But I can say we are in a better spot now. I thought this would be nice to discuss and to talk to others about that maybe went through similar situations.
