Welcome to the Flock!
Hello, my name is Courtney and I’m just a girl who loves her birds. And all birds for that matter! and I believe that caring for birds can be one of the most rewarding experiences, but also one of the most complex and challenging. There are so many perspectives and even outdated practices it’s hard to know where to go. I hope that we can create a flock of avian enthusiasts who can share experiences and learn from one another, myself included! Please feels free to ask, share your experiences and let this be a safe place to learn and allow ourselves to make mistakes so we can be the be the best we can be for our feathered friends! Thank you!

Happy National Pets day!
I know we always talk about the challenges to owning a bird and their downfalls. And let me be clear, I’m never trying to gatekeep owning parrots, but the reality is they are the number one pet that gets rehomed. So my goal is not to deter anyone from getting, but to spread information so that when and if you bring home your bird, I can help set you and your companion up for success. So today let’s focus on celebrating their amazing traits! 1) Their intelligence 🧠- it’s such a wonder to watch their brain think and come to understand the world around them! 2) Their Long Lifespan- if you truly love your parrot the way they love you, their long lifespan will never be long enough, and they can be apart of your home as a family member for decades! 3) Their Personality- one part of my job here that makes my job challenging is that each bird is different and unique just like humans. But that’s also one of their best traits! They can have big personalities and so much character that varies from bird to bird, not just species to species 4) Physical Beauty and entertainment- there’s no lying that birds are beautiful creatures, their vibrant colours to their elegantly sculpted bodies. As much as they are beautiful to look at, they know how to connect with our soul and connect with us on a deeper level! 5)My favourite…. They form Deep Bonds with their humans. The bond between a person and their companion birds has no words. It’s a silent connection that connects two living beings who come from different worlds and their bond is unique to them. I can’t even put into words how strong of a feeling this bond can evoke. Below I’ve shared a picture of my “soul bird” Arlo. He was such a significant part of my life and I miss him dearly everyday. He’s why I’m doing what I’m doing! Share with us your pet or pets with whom you have shared a strong Bond! Can be any animal, not just birds! Because today’s the day we celebrate our commitment and love to our pets! Who love us selflessly, and see the best in us every day.

Spring is in the Air!
When they start saying spring is in the air, most people take a deep sigh of relief. One particular group of people who do not? Bird Owners. Bird owners know that this is the time of year that we start seeing hormonal birds. I am actually going to start a whole series called "Hormonal Birds open the can of worms". And I truly mean it, spring time is like opening a whole new can of worms. Birds that are more hormonal are sometimes a whole new bird, they can be aggressive, scream, sexually frustrated, and start laying eggs which can lead to potential complications. The biggest problem for me is not even the birds... it's the people who experience this new bird and think there is something wrong with them and rehome them due to undesirable behaviours. You may see behaviour such as screaming, hiding in enclosed spaces, regurgitating, harmful behaviours, and what one book referred to it as: "Polishing the Perch". These behaviours show that a bird is more hormonal than usual. But what can we do to reduce these behaviours that lead to built up frustration and encourage impossible expectations from their human companion (breeding, I mean breeding) Only pet your bird on the head, and I mean this year round. Petting on the back gives them the wrong signal that you're "Looking for something more". Give them AT LEAST 12 hours of complete silence and darkness at night. What do we love about the retreat of winter? It's more daylight hours! To birds that means its baby making season! Theres a reason we see an abundance of chicks as a symbol of easter! This is the one time you'll hear me say this, but reduce or hold off on giving them fresh fruits and vegetables or other warm mushy foods. This evolutionary cue tells them that fresh fruits and veg means its spring time, further promoting hormones. Try to give them extra space, and by that I mean don't give into their heightened affections, as hard as it may be! Like I said, hormones are worthy of an entire series and a very complex issues. If you have any questions about hormone season, don't be afraid to comment or reach out!
