Welcome and Introduction
Welcome—Glad You’re Here Hello. My name is Ryan Sturgis. I’m a husband of 20 years and a father of five lovely children (2 girls and 3 boys pictured with me). I’m really grateful you’re here and excited to start this community together. My journey into biblical counseling didn’t begin in a classroom—it began in real life. Years of pastoring and counseling, walking with people through pain, confusion, anxiety, broken relationships, and spiritual questions showed me something very clearly: people don’t just need answers, they need hope that transforms the heart. While I started with Cognitive Behavior Therapies, over time, I became convinced that Scripture was more than adequate to address everything at stake in counseling—it actually provides the clearest anthropology of the human condition and the most hopeful path forward for the hurting soul. The Bible explains why we struggle (sin, suffering, and a broken world), and it also reveals how God meets us there with truth, grace, and transformation through Christ. That conviction led me to pursue formal training in biblical counseling, but more importantly, it shaped how I care for people. Biblical counseling isn’t about quick fixes or behavior modification—it’s about helping people see their lives, their pain, and their hearts in light of God’s truth, and learning how to respond to life in ways that honor Him and lead to lasting change. As a pastor and counselor, I not only lead this ministry which aims to educate and to provide counseling, I am also lead pastor of a new church in Springfield Va that teaches the Bible as sufficient for mental and emotional health. Jesus as hope for the whole person. Please, take a moment to introduce yourself and share your journey to biblical counseling.
Welcome and Introduction
Hey there!
Hi, I’m Ruth Miller. I’m a quirky, artistic sort of person. I love cats and the Bible and count among my many blessings my husband, three children, and nine grandchildren. My cat, Lu Lu, loves to hang around while I write and draw, but unfortunately, she always drapes her big, fluffy tail right in the way! Move over, Lu Lu! I have way too much excess creativity and imagination, which makes me tend to find unusual perspectives in ordinary events. However, I’ve discovered I can use that talent to make people think about God and the Bible in new ways. I'm a professional artist, calligrapher, quiller, and author. I love God's Word, and my passion is to inspire others to apply it to their lives through my art, books, and teaching. Anyone who has been in a class I've taught can tell you my teaching style is...unique. God's Word will not return to Him void (Isaiah 55:11), and my prayer is that everything I do will produce much fruit. My artistic and teaching philosophy is simple: "If it doesn't glorify God, then why bother?" (Another one seems to be "How much mischief can I get into?") May God richly bless you with every spiritual blessing!
A tad bit about me
Hello - first day on the Skoll community board. I will watch the board, as often as I can, view posts, might comment too. Will I agree with everything posted? Of course not, if I did it would make me an AI robot and not a human. Do I want to dig deeper into my faith? Of course! Anyone who has the pleasure, or oddity, of taking a bible study session with me has come to know a few things: 1. I have a grand sense of humor. 2. I always have questions for God - other than WHY God?. 3. And I often use the PBG translation of the bible. You will not find this translation in any printed format. So far Nelson Publication's have not come knocking on my door begging me to provide the content for this translation. Personal opinion they should I think once published the PBG translated bible would sell millions of copies. If so I promise to donate at least 25% of my royalties to a very worth charity. 4. The PBG translation will contain accurate biblical text and many of the questions the reader might just have been pondering. Might even contain questions you never thought were necessary. If you wish to find out just what the heck is the PBG translation, well you simply will need to have read all of the long post, and ask the question. Promise to respond.

The starting point
Here is a great starting point for understanding biblical counseling. Heath Lambert does a fantastic job of helping to paint a clear picture of biblical counseling and why the truest and most God-honoring approach to counseling the soul is God’s Word.

The starting point
Counseling is a theological exercise
All counseling is theological: the counselor applies who he/she thinks God is (or is not), how God has made man (or did not), and what he believes man’s deepest need is.
