WALKING IN THE SPIRIT
The Key to Self-Control and Victory Over the Flesh
One of the greatest challenges every Christian faces is the daily battle between the flesh and the Spirit. The Bible teaches that believers are engaged in a spiritual conflict in which the desires of the flesh oppose the will of God. The good news is that God has not left His children powerless. Through the Holy Spirit, believers can walk in victory, exercise self-control, and live lives that honor Christ.
The book of Proverbs provides a vivid picture of what happens when a person lacks self-control:
"He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls." (Proverbs 25:28, KJV)
In ancient times, city walls provided protection from enemies. A city without walls was vulnerable to attack, invasion, and destruction. Likewise, a believer who does not exercise spiritual self-control becomes vulnerable to temptation, deception, and the destructive influences of the flesh.
The Danger of Living According to the Flesh
The flesh refers to the sinful nature that opposes God's will. Even after salvation, believers must continually choose whether to follow the desires of the flesh or submit to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
The flesh often manifests itself through anger, jealousy, pride, selfish ambition, lust, unforgiveness, and other sinful attitudes and behaviors. When these desires are allowed to rule, they can damage relationships, hinder spiritual growth, and rob believers of God's peace and joy.
A person without spiritual discipline is much like the city described in Proverbs 25:28—unprotected and exposed to attack. Satan seeks opportunities to exploit weaknesses and lead believers away from God's best. This is why self-control and spiritual vigilance are essential components of the Christian life.
Walking in the Spirit Brings Victory
God's solution to the problem of the flesh is not mere willpower. Victory comes through walking in the Spirit. The Apostle Paul writes:
"This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh." (Galatians 5:16, KJV)
This verse reveals a powerful biblical principle. Rather than focusing solely on resisting sin, believers are called to focus on walking with God. As we draw near to Him through prayer, worship, Bible study, and obedience, the Holy Spirit empowers us to overcome fleshly desires.
Walking in the Spirit means allowing God to direct every area of life. It involves surrendering our thoughts, decisions, emotions, and actions to His leadership. When believers remain sensitive to the Holy Spirit's guidance, they become stronger in their ability to resist temptation and choose righteousness. The closer we walk with God, the less influence the flesh has over our lives.
Living by the Spirit Every Day
Walking in the Spirit is not a one-time decision; it is a daily lifestyle. Every day presents opportunities to either yield to the flesh or submit to the Holy Spirit.
Paul reminds believers: "If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit." (Galatians 5:25, KJV)
Because believers have been made spiritually alive through Christ, they are called to live consistently with their new identity. Walking in the Spirit means aligning our actions with the work God has already begun within us. This daily walk includes spending time in God's Word, maintaining a consistent prayer life, obeying biblical principles, and remaining sensitive to the Holy Spirit's promptings. As believers cultivate these spiritual disciplines, they become stronger and more mature in their faith.
The Fruit of a Spirit-Led Life
When Christians walk in the Spirit, the Holy Spirit produces spiritual fruit in their lives. The fruit of
Temperance, or self-control, serves as a safeguard against the works of the flesh. It helps believers rule their own spirit and maintain spiritual stability. Rather than being controlled by emotions, impulses, or circumstances, Spirit-filled believers learn to respond according to God's wisdom and truth.
The Fruit of the Spirit becomes evidence that God is actively transforming a believer's heart and character.
The Christian life is a daily choice between yielding to the flesh and walking in the Spirit. Proverbs 25:28 warns of the dangers of lacking self-control, while Galatians 5:16 and 5:25 provide the solution: walk in the Spirit. When believers submit themselves to the Holy Spirit, they receive the strength to overcome temptation, exercise self-control, and bear spiritual fruit. Instead of living like a city without walls, they become spiritually fortified, protected, and equipped to fulfill God's purpose.
As followers of Christ, may we choose each day to walk in the Spirit, trusting God to guide our steps and empower us to live victorious lives that bring glory to Him.
"This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh." (Galatians 5:16, KJV)
