The Key to Self-Control and Victory Over the Flesh One of the greatest challenges every Christian faces is the daily battle between the flesh and the Spirit. The Bible teaches that believers are engaged in a spiritual conflict in which the desires of the flesh oppose the will of God. The good news is that God has not left His children powerless. Through the Holy Spirit, believers can walk in victory, exercise self-control, and live lives that honor Christ. The book of Proverbs provides a vivid picture of what happens when a person lacks self-control: "He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls." (Proverbs 25:28, KJV) In ancient times, city walls provided protection from enemies. A city without walls was vulnerable to attack, invasion, and destruction. Likewise, a believer who does not exercise spiritual self-control becomes vulnerable to temptation, deception, and the destructive influences of the flesh. The Danger of Living According to the Flesh The flesh refers to the sinful nature that opposes God's will. Even after salvation, believers must continually choose whether to follow the desires of the flesh or submit to the leading of the Holy Spirit. The flesh often manifests itself through anger, jealousy, pride, selfish ambition, lust, unforgiveness, and other sinful attitudes and behaviors. When these desires are allowed to rule, they can damage relationships, hinder spiritual growth, and rob believers of God's peace and joy. A person without spiritual discipline is much like the city described in Proverbs 25:28—unprotected and exposed to attack. Satan seeks opportunities to exploit weaknesses and lead believers away from God's best. This is why self-control and spiritual vigilance are essential components of the Christian life. Walking in the Spirit Brings Victory God's solution to the problem of the flesh is not mere willpower. Victory comes through walking in the Spirit. The Apostle Paul writes: "This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh." (Galatians 5:16, KJV)
