Ducks were birthed this week this week Here’s a clear, practical breakdown of how to hatch (birth) and maintain ducks—from eggs to a productive flock. 🥚 1. Egg Selection & Fertility - Use fertilized eggs (drake + female present) - Eggs should be: clean (not washed) no cracks less than 7–10 days old - 👉 Store at room temp before incubation (not fridge) 🌡️ 2. Incubation (Artificial or Natural) Incubator method (most controlled): - Temperature: 99.5°F - Humidity: Days 1–25 → 55–60% Last 3 days → 65–75% - - Turn eggs: 3–5 times daily - Hatch time: ~28 days Natural (mother duck): - Provide safe, quiet nesting area - She handles turning + heat 🐣 3. Hatching Stage - Stop turning eggs at day 25 - Ducklings hatch around day 28 - Do NOT rush or open eggs 👉 Let them dry inside incubator before moving 🐥 4. Brooding (First 4–6 Weeks) This is the most sensitive stage. Setup: - Heat lamp: Week 1 → 90°F Lower 5°F each week - - Bedding: pine shavings (no slippery surface) Feeding: - Starter feed (non-medicated) - Add niacin (VERY important) → prevents leg issues Water: - Shallow water (they can drown if too deep) 🦆 5. Growing Ducks (6 Weeks+) Needs: - Access to water (pond or container) - Shelter (protect from predators) - Space to roam Diet: - grains + greens + insects - always clean water 🏠 6. Housing & Protection - Secure coop at night - Protect from: raccoons foxes hawks - 👉 Ducks are easy targets—security matters 🧼 7. Health & Maintenance - Clean water daily (they dirty it fast) - Watch for: limping → niacin deficiency dirty feathers → poor hygiene low energy → illness - 🥚 8. Production (Where You Make Money) - Egg laying starts: 4–6 months - Can lay 150–300 eggs/year 👉 Income streams: - eggs - meat - breeding stock - fertilizer (manure) 💰 9. Business Angle (Important) - Ducks are low maintenance vs chickens - Eggs sell at premium prices - Good for: small farms backyard + commercial mix -
