START HERE::: Welcome to THE FAMILY HISTORY COLLECTIVE
My name is Ceri and I’m The Geordie Genealogist, this is a warm and welcoming community for family history enthusiasts who want to trace ancestors, solve brick walls, understand old records and share discoveries with others who love genealogy. Whether you’re building your family tree, researching military ancestors, deciphering old handwriting or trying to break through a stubborn brick wall, The Family History Collective is here to help. Inside the community you’ll find: - Weekly themed discussions - Help reading old records and certificates - Guidance on occupations, military records and old maps - Tips for finding ancestors in census, parish and workhouse records - Support with surnames, DNA and family mysteries - Live workshops and challenges - A friendly place to share discoveries and ask questions You don’t need to be an expert — just curious about your family history and ready to learn alongside others. If you’re: - Not sure where to start - Drowning in hints and shaky trees - Confused by records, dates, or places - Or worried you’re “doing it wrong” Why not use the Introduce Yourself section to tell us a little bit about the following: 1. Tell us who you’re researching 2. Where they’re from (if you know) 3. And what you’re stuck on (or hoping to learn) I’m really looking forward to helping you uncover your family’s story — one step at a time. Let’s get started. – The Geordie Genealogist

How I Can Help You (And What This Community Is For)
Hi everyone - I want to quickly explain how support works here so expectations are clear and fair for EVERYONE. This is a supportive, practical space, not a competition. WHAT THIS COMMUNITY IS::: This space is for: ✅ Learning how genealogy works ✅ Asking beginner questions ✅ Understanding records and next steps ✅ Building confidence in your own research ✅ Getting unstuck without feeling stupid I'm here to guide, explain and help you think through problems instead of creating them. WHAT THIS COMMUNITY IS NOT::: To keep things sustainable I don't... 🚫 Build or extend family trees inside the community 🚫 Do detailed research for individual members within this community space 🚫 Analyse full DNA match lists 🚫 Spend hours on one person's case in comments That kind of work needs proper time and focus! I won’t do the work for you inside the community, but I will help you learn how to do it well. ✋ If you'd like more hands on support, I do offer: Private 1:1 sessions where I will help with: ✅ Research guidance ✅ Tree Reviews ✅ Brick wall analysis ✅ Military research These are PAID sessions because they involve detailed, personalised work. Email me here: [email protected] for more information and booking.

Please Introduce Yourself Here...
Tell us a little bit about who you are, and where you're from and we want to know: 1. Who you’re researching 2. Where they’re from (if you know) 3. And what you’re stuck on (or hoping to learn) Ask a question, even if it's basic. There is no such thing as a silly genealogy question here!
Sharing my research
Well, I have managed to put together the history of one member of my family, William Ferry (my great grandfather). This is the first time I have ever put something together like this with so much detail, although I do think I may have added to much about the local shipyards, but thought I'd share it to see what you all thought.
Podcasts
I have never had any interest in listening to podcasts as I would rather watch something on the tv, but that has recently changed thanks to @Ceri Logan. She has shared some details of her favourite genealogy podcasts, so I thought I would give them a go as it's something I am extremely interested in, and what a surprise I am really enjoying them and finding them so informative. I started listening to 'A Family History of...' and loved how they had added so much more details to a persons life - what it was like to live at that time, general employment, living conditions etc. So today, I have picked one of my ancestors and I am trying to put together a more detailed story of their life (on paper, not podcast!), but I am learning so much more and hopefully making it more interesting to share with family and friends. I will share my story on here too in the hope to inspire more people 😉
