There was a time when luxury in the beverage world was easy to define. It was measured by age statements, prestigious labels, limited allocations and the price on the menu. The rarer the bottle, the greater its perceived value. For many years, that was enough. Today, I believe we’re witnessing something different. Working across the UAE hospitality industry, I’ve noticed that conversations around beverages are becoming far more thoughtful. Guests are no longer impressed simply because something is expensive or difficult to find. Instead, they’re becoming curious. They want to know the story behind a producer, why a particular wine was chosen, how a spirit is crafted, whether ingredients are sustainably sourced, or if there’s a premium alcohol free alternative that delivers the same sense of occasion. What fascinates me is that none of these questions are really about the drink itself. They’re about the experience. Luxury is becoming less transactional and far more emotional. A memorable recommendation from a knowledgeable bartender can have a greater impact than the most expensive bottle on the shelf. A beautifully crafted alcohol free serve can feel just as celebratory as vintage Champagne when it fits the moment. Guests increasingly value authenticity over exclusivity, and intention over excess. This shift challenges all of us in hospitality. Our role is no longer to present the most prestigious labels and hope they speak for themselves. Instead, we’re expected to understand the guest, recognise the occasion and recommend something that feels personal. That requires knowledge, empathy and genuine hospitality qualities that no luxury brand can replace on their own. I don’t believe traditional luxury is disappearing. Exceptional wines, aged whiskies and iconic Champagnes will always have their place. What is changing is the definition of premium. Today, luxury is just as likely to be found in craftsmanship, sustainability, wellness and meaningful storytelling as it is in rarity.
