Training tip #1
Training goal:
Full combination focusing on players decision making in exercises
10-15 minutes warmup - up to kids but they have to at least 3 minutes run and get warm a bit and then dynamic stretching
15-20 minutes games:
1. game - kids will make a circle, you tell them to take a look to a player on the left - that is player they want to catch. Then you tell them to take a look to a player on the right - that is player who tries to catch them. You make a playing area - not so big and let them spread within the area. Let the game goes only for like 20s and then stop it. Who was caught will do 10s sprint on place and then we do another round. In total 6 rounds.
2. game - players make pairs, you let first one to do anything he/she wants to, second one has to copy it (it should include running, walking, jumping, arm and leg movements etc). To make it more interesting, making bigger groups make it more fun - you put 5 players in a row and if first one does something they all have to do it but as they cannot see the first one (third, fourth, fifth), they just have to wait until player in front of them does it. Let them do this for 60 seconds and then change in couple. Try to change players in the pairs after it or make bigger groups. Game should be for around 8 minutes.
5 minutes let them play
1. exercise - half court combination starting with long serve -> then drop shot -> net shot (after that, you continue again with lift -> drop shot -> net shot) 3 minutes each side
2. exercise - half court combination expanding to other half court. Combination looks like this:
  • Long serve (straight) -> drop shot (straight) -> net shot (straight) -> lift (straight) -> drop shot (straight) -> net shot (straight) -> lift (cross) -> drop shot (straight) -> net shot (straight) -> lift (straight) -> drop shot (straight) -> net shot (straight) -> lift (cross)
  • Make sure they change in serving
  • Leave them do this 6 minutes
3. exercise - let players make their own combination - we will give them only rule:
  • It must consists of short BH serve for boys, and long FH serve for girls, cross court drop shot and straight clear
  • Give them 3 minutes to think about it, discuss it and try performing it
  • After that you leave them doing their exercise for 5 minutes
  • When they finish let them discuss how it went and if they would do any changes
4. exercise - you put two pairs together and give them these tasks
  • They have to describe their previous combination to other pair (it could include changes from previous discussion in the end) and even show them and try to tell them what to focus on
  • Other pair do the same
  • After that again 5-10 minutes to perform exercise which was given by other pair
  • In the end 2 pairs come together and discuss their thoughts and what they would change
The end of session you will as a coach take those 2 pairs together for 3 minutes and discuss everything with them and give them feedback. Its important to let them speak and not only telling them your thoughts. Other players are playing single matches. After that you pick other 2 pairs (or if you have more coaches, you can do all at once)
After discussion, you make all players come together and make an evaluation of the whole session. Then let them run for a bit (3-5 minutes) and let them discuss the session. Don't force them to be quiet, make environment open to sharing their thought.
