The Doctor’s Prescription
“Some things were necessary for your survival but were never intended to accompany you into your future.”
The Diagnosis
There comes a point in every journey when you have to ask yourself a difficult question: Am I tired because the climb is hard, or am I tired because I’m carrying things I was never meant to take this far?
We often assume that moving forward requires more effort, more discipline, more resources, more connections, more knowledge. And sometimes it does. But there are also seasons when progress isn’t about what you need to add to your life. It’s about what you’re finally willing to release.
Some of us are attempting to ASCEND while carrying old offenses, regret, guilt, outdated expectations, the need to prove ourselves, responsibilities we were never assigned, and relationships or identities we have simply outgrown. After carrying something for long enough, we can become so accustomed to its weight that we stop recognizing it as heavy. It simply becomes our “normal.”
But normal does not mean necessary.
There are beliefs and behaviors that may have helped you survive an earlier season of your life but are now preventing you from fully experiencing the one in front of you. There are relationships you can appreciate without continuing to depend upon.
There are mistakes you can learn from without continuing to punish yourself for making them.
And there are chapters that deserve to be honored—and then closed. Sometimes, the strongest thing you can do is put something down.
The Prescription
This week, I want you to give yourself permission to travel lighter. Take an honest inventory of what you’re carrying and ask yourself one question:
“Does this belong where I’m going?”
Notice that I didn’t ask whether it once mattered. I didn’t ask whether it was important, whether you cared about it, or even whether it helped shape you.
The question is whether it belongs in the future you are building? That distinction matters.
We have a tendency to believe that releasing something means we are rejecting it. But release is not rejection; release is recognition. It is recognizing that a person, experience, belief, behavior, or season served its purpose—and having enough wisdom to know when its assignment is complete.
You don’t have to hate your past to leave it behind.
You don’t have to deny what happened to heal from it. And you don’t have to remain loyal to an old version of yourself simply because that version helped you survive. At some point, survival has to give way to living.
ASCEND Insight
One of the misconceptions about ASCENSION is that going higher always requires gaining more.
Sometimes it does. But elevation also requires elimination.
Think about how often we ask ourselves, What else do I need? We look for another strategy, another opportunity, another relationship, another credential, another book, another course, another goal.
But perhaps a better question for this season is:
“What do I need less of?”
Less distraction.
Less comparison.
Less resentment.
Less fear.
Less concern about what everyone else thinks.
Less attachment to an identity that no longer reflects who you are becoming.
Nature gives us this lesson everywhere. Trees release their leaves. A snake sheds its skin. A seed breaks through the shell that once protected it. In each case, something that was once useful must eventually be released for continued growth to occur. The same is true for us.
There are versions of you that deserve your gratitude—but not your continued residence.
Thank them.
Learn from them.
And keep climbing.
This Week’s Practice
I want you to do something practical this week.
Take a sheet of paper and create two columns.
At the top of the first column write:
WHAT I AM CARRYING
At the top of the second write:
WHAT I AM CHOOSING
Then be honest.
Maybe you’ve been carrying resentment. Choose forgiveness—not because what happened was acceptable, but because you no longer want the experience controlling your emotional energy.
Maybe you’ve been carrying someone else’s expectations. Choose alignment. Maybe you’ve been carrying regret. Choose wisdom. Maybe you’ve been carrying fear. Choose movement.
Maybe you’ve been carrying the need to prove yourself. Choose peace.
Identify at least three things.
Then take one tangible action this week that represents your decision to release something.
Have the conversation. Establish the boundary. Forgive yourself. Delete the reminder. Change the routine. Stop revisiting the situation. Say no without writing a dissertation explaining why.
Whatever it looks like for you, make release more than an idea. Don’t just think lighter. Live lighter.
Weekly Affirmation
This week, remind yourself:
I release what no longer belongs in my future. I honor the lessons of my past without becoming imprisoned by them. I release guilt, resentment, outdated expectations, and the need to prove who I am. I make room for peace, purpose, wisdom, and possibility.
My hands are open.
My heart is lighter.
My future has room to breathe.
Today, I ASCEND.
Reflection Question
Spend some quiet time with this question:
What am I carrying simply because I’ve carried it for so long that I’ve forgotten I can put it down?
That question may uncover something important.
Because some burdens aren’t assignments. They’re habits. We’ve carried them for so long that their weight has become familiar. And familiarity has a strange way of convincing us that something belongs simply because it has been present for a long time.
It doesn’t.
You are allowed to put it down.
The Doctor’s Closing Note
There is something powerful about an open hand.
A closed hand can protect what it already possesses, but it has very little capacity to receive anything new. An open hand, however, can do both—it can release and receive.
Maybe this week isn’t about fighting harder. Maybe it isn’t about working longer. Maybe it isn’t about adding one more thing to an already overloaded life. Maybe your next breakthrough begins with three simple words:
“I’m releasing this.”
Put it down.
Not because it didn’t matter.
Not because it didn’t hurt.
Not because it wasn’t real.
Put it down because where you’re going requires your hands to be free.
There are opportunities you haven’t touched yet.
People you haven’t impacted yet. Ideas you haven’t created yet. Rooms you haven’t entered yet. And there are still mountains with your name on them. You’ll need your strength for where you’re going. So don’t waste it carrying what belongs to where you’ve been. Travel lighter.
