Fonts & Branding: More Than Just Letters
Look at the Louis Vuitton logo. Now imagine it in Comic Sans.
Still feel luxurious? Probably not.
That’s the power of fonts: they’re not just letters. Fonts carry personality, influence emotions, and shape how people see your brand.
A Quick History of Fonts
- 📜 1400s → Johannes Gutenberg invents the printing press. First fonts: Blackletter (dark, heavy, calligraphic).
- 🇮🇹 Late 1400s → Roman typefaces introduced—cleaner, easier to read.
- 📰 1930s → Times New Roman designed for newspapers.
- 💻 Today → Thousands of fonts exist, from formal to playful.
👉 Fun fact: Comic Sans was made for comic speech bubbles, but people misused it everywhere… designers hate it so much, NASA banned it.
The 4 Main Font Types
- Serif → Classic, formal, trustworthy (e.g., Times New Roman).
- Sans Serif → Clean, modern, simple (e.g., Helvetica, Google’s logo).
- Script → Elegant, creative, handwriting style (e.g., invitations).
- Display → Decorative, bold, fun (e.g., Impact, posters).
Fonts in Branding
Why fonts matter for your brand:
- Identity → Fonts show what you stand for. Luxury brands = elegant serifs. Tech brands = clean sans serifs.
- Recognition → Coca-Cola’s script or Google’s playful sans serif are unforgettable.
- Trust → A bank in Comic Sans? No thanks. Fonts set the tone for professionalism.
