The Greek historian Herodotus wrote in his famous work, The Histories (specifically Book 2, Chapter 2) that the Egyptians confessed that the Phrygians were older than they and that this story was heard from the priests of Hephaestus’ temple at Memphis. First in Greek, Herodotus calls the temple the "Temple of Hephaestus," but in Memphis, Egypt, this was actually the Great Temple of Ptah. Second admitting that another nation (the Phrygians) was older than them based on evidence, the priests were establishing themselves as honest, reliable keepers of history. Third according mainstream history the Phrygians were an Iron Age, Indo-European speaking people who did not arrive or emerge in modern-day Turkey Anatolia until roughly 1200 BCE to 800 BCE. Herodotus's story claimed the Phrygians were the "oldest nation on earth," and today, Göbekli Tepe and Karahan Tepe are famous for holding the "oldest monumental structures on earth as both are located in modern-day Turkey (Anatolia). Although the time gap between them is identical because Karahan Tepe and Göbekli Tepe were abandoned and buried by 8000 BCE. But most probably as the Egyptian Priest concluded that the Phrygians were the "oldest nation," he was guessing based on a flawed linguistic test I guess. Also Ancient Greek and Phrygian were incredibly similar, so much so that modern linguists classify them as sister languages. They are closer to each other than to any other languages in the Indo-European family, having evolved from a single shared prehistoric ancestor known as Proto-Graeco-Phrygian.
