Death and Dying
Your patient just told you they were diagnosed with a terminal disease…. how do you respond?
As a psychiatric nurse practitioner, I’ve had the privilege of caring for people of all ages, backgrounds, and conditions.
My work is deeply rewarding, but it also comes with difficult truths—one of the hardest being the realization that I cannot “fix” or “cure” everyone I meet.
When it comes to terminal illness, I’ve learned—sometimes through my own missteps—that the most important reminder is this: this is their journey, not mine.
My role isn’t to heal, but to walk alongside them, to listen, and to hold space for their experience.
One of the most powerful ways to do this is through dignity therapy—inviting patients to reflect on their life story, share their wisdom, and leave behind a legacy of meaning for their loved ones.
