This is a big one.
We tend to scan.
We try to protect something in ourselves.
But here’s the question: When you’re hyper-focused… are you focused? Or are you hypervigilant?
Because those are not the same.
Here is the distinction:
Reading the room = observing what’s happening (tone, energy, engagement)
Hypervigilance = interpreting and filling in gaps (“they’re judging me”)
Quick check in the moment:
Am I observing or interpreting? Do I have evidence or am I guessing?
Use this in meetings: Pause → Notice → Name
Pause: don’t react
Note: facts only
Name: “This person looks distracted” vs. “They think I’m boring”
That shift keeps you clear instead of spiraling.
And this is why people freeze: your attention turns inward under pressure.
