This is what I do daily when I help people fix their credit reports. It's a lot of steps, but worth it.
1. Understand Your Credit Report
2. Dispute Personal Information
Ensure that your name, address, and other personal details are accurate. If you see errors, dispute them right away. This can even be done by phone.👉 Dispute Personal Information 3. Prepare Your Dispute Letter
- Type your letter, but do not print it — it must be handwritten.👉 Letter Guidance
⚠️ Important: Always use the letter template that matches the type of negative item you are disputing. For example:
- Closed accounts with late payments → use one template - You want to delete the account
- Open accounts with late payments → use a different template - You want to keep it open, but update to current, THAT WAY you can keep the history
4. How to Write and Send the Letter
- Write the dispute letter in red ink or with a thick ballpoint pen on paper.
- Attach the following: Valid proof of ID, Utility bill, Signed SSN card, and printed picture of credit report.
Send the letter via certified mail so you have proof of delivery.
5. Follow Up
Wait 4–5 business days, then confirm the bureau received your letter by checking the tracking online. Once confirmed, call to follow up.👉 How to Reach a Human Rep Faster 6. Round 2 (If the Item Comes Back Verified)
If the bureau verifies the item and it’s still inaccurate, escalate the dispute:
- File a complaint with the CFPB (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau).👉 File with CFPB
⚠️ Use CFPB only for Round 2 and Round 3 disputes, not the first round.
NOW GET TO WORK! HAHA
