MY HONEST REVIEW OF AAA MODEL
From AI Tools Directory to AI Automation Agency
In April 2024 , I started my very own AAA. By June, I formed my own team of devs. Along the way, I've seen a lot of get-rich-quick schemes involving AI, but I've also discovered some real gems that haven't been fully explored yet—especially the AAA model. So, I wanted to share this post to shed light on this business model, and maybe even help you start your own agency, or at least be more discerning when those cold emails inevitably flood your inbox.
Foreword
Running an AAA isn’t about using AI tools to pump out content and make a quick buck. That ship has sailed. If you're hoping to make $5 from selling AI-generated T-shirts on Etsy, you’re in for a rude awakening. That’s not a sustainable business.
However, you also don’t need deep AI knowledge or a fancy degree to run an AAA. It’s more about practical, real-world applications of generative AI. What you do need is common sense, a willingness to learn, and the ability to work hard—because this won’t just run on autopilot.
One thing I've noticed is that the most successful businesses that have implemented AI don’t use it to replace workers; they use it to enhance their existing operations. This is the mindset you need if you’re going to use AI as part of a business model.
The field is still relatively unsaturated, and AI hype is still fresh, especially for enterprises. If you're interested in generative AI, now’s a great time to dive in. I’ll share three successful AI-adjacent business models I've come across and give you tips on how to get started.
What Exactly Is an AI Automation Agency (AAA)?
At its core, an AAA builds custom AI solutions for businesses. While I have over 1,500 AI tools listed in my directory, a common complaint from enterprise users is that pre-built SaaS tools are too generic to meet their specific needs. Smaller businesses often lack the time or skills to develop custom solutions, so there's real demand for tailored AI solutions.
The AAA model is a lot like web development or WordPress agencies—except you’re incorporating AI and automation into every solution you create.
And just to clarify, AI alone isn’t enough. Many agencies make the mistake of offering solutions that end up increasing a client’s workload, which defeats the purpose. For example, if you build an AI tool that requires manual updates to a knowledge base, you’re creating more work, not less. The key to successful AI solutions is combining the new (generative AI) with the old (automation tools like Zapier and APIs).
For this business model to succeed, it helps if you have experience in a specific niche. Knowing the pain points and needs of a particular industry will make it easier to book calls and create more valuable solutions for clients—meaning you can charge more. A mistake I see often (thanks to "get rich quick" YouTubers) is focusing too much on selling a productized service instead of truly understanding business needs. The agency model is about custom solutions, not cookie-cutter products.
How to Get Started
  1. Pick a Niche Ideally, choose an industry you’ve worked in before. Common niches being targeted by cold emails right now include real estate, e-commerce, auto dealerships, law firms, and medical offices. But honestly, this business model works well for any white-collar service business or high-volume industries.
  2. Set Up Your Toolbox Just like you’d need a pressure washer to start a pressure washing business, you need the right tools to run an AAA. If you don’t have programming experience, you can either hire developers (via personal contacts or platforms like Upwork) or use no-code tools. When it comes to practical AI applications, the coding is often straightforward.
  3. Start Cold Outreach If you don’t have an existing network, cold outreach is unavoidable. You’ll need to craft short, enticing cold emails that speak directly to the needs of your niche. I’ll share some tips on using AI for outreach later, but for now, just know that understanding your audience deeply is crucial.
Why the AAA Model Works Without Extensive Tech Knowledge
You don’t need to be a seasoned web developer to make this model work. Most solutions clients need are built by using APIs and integrating with existing tech stacks. The real value comes from designing a solution that makes sense for the client’s business—not the technical work itself.
If you do plan to build these solutions yourself (even with Python), most of the heavy lifting has already been done by libraries and tools. For example, calling GPT with a Python library can be done with just a single line of code.
Building AI Solutions: A Quick Overview
To build AAA solutions, familiarize yourself with tools like Langchain and LlamaIndex. These help integrate internal data with large language models (LLMs) and perform autonomous actions, which are key aspects of most custom AI tools.
  • RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation) is the method used when you see AI tools “train” on your data. It essentially lets AI search your data based on meaning, retrieving relevant information to generate responses.
  • Autonomous Agents can handle tasks, like an e-commerce chatbot managing customer orders or returns. This is done by parsing AI outputs to trigger specific API calls.
If you’re not keen on coding, no-code tools like MyAskAI can build chatbots or internal apps that incorporate these principles. For example, you can create an AI chatbot that answers customer questions based on uploaded data like product catalogs or support tickets.
Finding Clients
None of this matters if you can’t find clients. Cold outreach is key, and AI can help here, too. Once you've identified your niche and their needs, craft compelling cold emails or calls to get prospects on demos or consultations.
Personalize your emails, and if possible, use AI to automate the process. There are tools like SmartWriter.ai, or you could ask ChatGPT to generate personalized emails for your outreach.
How to Close Deals
When you do get prospects on the line, start with a consultation. Listen carefully to their goals and needs, then offer high-level solutions that address those pain points. Have a demo ready for your second meeting—either custom-built or using a no-code tool.
From there, work with the client to create a proposal. Be clear about what you’re building, timelines, and pricing. Use a value-based approach to pricing since different clients may find different levels of value in your solutions.
Incorporating AI Into Your Own Marketing
Beyond cold sales, set up a funnel to capture warm leads. Even if you don’t have an AI-related website, build a presence on social media. You’ll also want to establish a Google Business Profile and TrustPilot page for credibility.
Legal and Privacy Concerns
When building custom AI solutions, privacy is a big deal, especially when working with proprietary data. Be upfront with clients about third-party tools you’re using, and make sure everything is clear in the contracts.
Final Thoughts
Running an AI agency isn’t a quick way to make money. It takes hard work, long hours, and constant learning. But if you’re genuinely interested in the practical applications of generative AI and have a knack for business, it could be the perfect time to jump in. The clock’s ticking before AAA agencies become as common as dropshipping, and those who start now will be ahead of the curve. Just remember—out of the thousands who read this, only a handful will take action. Will you be one of them?
