BODY, SOUL & SPIRIT
We Are Body, Soul, and Spirit — According to the Bible 📖
The Bible does not describe humans as only physical beings. Scripture reveals a three-part design created by God Himself: body, soul, and spirit—each distinct, each with purpose.
📖 The Foundational Proof
“Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
🔑 Notice the order and clarity: spirit → soul → body. Scripture separates them, proving they are not the same thing.
1️⃣ The
Body
— The Physical World
“For dust you are, and to dust you shall return.”
Genesis 3:19
  • Your body connects you to the natural world
  • It has senses, strength, and limitations
  • It is temporary, not eternal
“Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit?”
1 Corinthians 6:19
2️⃣ The
Soul
— Mind, Will, and Emotions
“For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?”
Mark 8:36
Your soul includes:
  • 🧠 Mind (thoughts, reasoning)
  • ❤️ Emotions (feelings, desires)
  • ✋ Will (choices, decisions)
“My soul magnifies the Lord…”
Luke 1:46
🔎 The soul is self-aware and must be renewed:
“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
Romans 12:2
3️⃣ The
Spirit
— God-Conscious & Eternal
“God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
John 4:24
Your spirit:
  • Is how you connect with God
  • Was dead in sin, made alive in Christ
  • Is reborn, not repaired
“That which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”
John 3:6
“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.”
Romans 8:16
🔥 This is why Jesus said you must be born again—not physically, but spiritually.
🗡️ Scripture That Divides Them Clearly
“For the word of God is living and powerful… dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow…”
Hebrews 4:12
⚔️ If soul and spirit can be divided, they are not the same.
🔥 Simple Truth Declaration (Shareable)
I am not just a body.
I have a soul.
I am a spirit—made alive in Christ.
God speaks to my spirit, renews my soul,
and uses my body for His glory. Amen 🙏
✨ Why This Matters
  • Salvation happens in the spirit
  • Transformation happens in the soul
  • Service happens through the body
When we confuse these, we misunderstand spiritual warfare, identity, healing, and growth.
Lets take a look at the MAJOR Difference
Spirit and Soul 💥
🔥 How the Spirit Leads vs How Emotions Lead
⚠️ The Core Difference
• The Holy Spirit leads from your spirit
• Emotions rise from your soul
• They are not the same, and Scripture warns us not to confuse them
🕊️ HOW THE HOLY SPIRIT LEADS
1️⃣ The Spirit Leads by Inner Witness, Not Emotional Pressure
“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.”
— Romans 8:16
✔ The Spirit speaks with clarity
✔ There is peace, even when the decision is difficult
✔ The direction remains steady over time
“Let the peace of God rule in your hearts…”
— Colossians 3:15
📌 The word rule means to govern like an umpire.
2️⃣ The Spirit Leads in Agreement with Scripture—Always
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
— Psalms 119:105
The Holy Spirit:
• Never contradicts the Word
• Never excuses sin
• Never rushes you into confusion
“God is not the author of confusion, but of peace.”
— 1 Corinthians 14:33
3️⃣ The Spirit Leads with Conviction, Not Condemnation
“When He has come, He will convict the world of sin…”
— John 16:8
🔹 Conviction is specific and hopeful
🔹 Condemnation is vague and crushing
“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.”
— Romans 8:1
🌊 HOW EMOTIONS LEAD (SOUL-DRIVEN LIFE)
1️⃣ Emotions Are Reactive
“He who trusts in his own heart is a fool.”
— Proverbs 28:26
Emotions:
• Rise suddenly
• Change quickly
• Are influenced by fear, offense, fatigue, and pride
📉 What feels “right” today can feel “wrong” tomorrow.
2️⃣ Emotions Seek Relief, Not Obedience
“The heart is deceitful above all things…”
— Jeremiah 17:9
Emotional decisions often sound like:
• “I just don’t feel peace anymore”
• “God wants me happy”
• “This feels right to me”
⚠️ Scripture never tells us to follow feelings—it tells us to walk by faith.
3️⃣ Emotions Often Clash with Truth
“We walk by faith, not by sight.”
— 2 Corinthians 5:7
Faith submits feelings to truth—not the other way around.
🗡️ THE KEY: DISCERNING SOUL vs SPIRIT
“For the word of God is living and powerful… dividing asunder of soul and spirit.”
— Hebrews 4:12
🔥 The Word trains you to recognize:
• What is emotional
• What is spiritual
• What is fleshly
• What is truly from God
🔑 Practical Test: Is This the Spirit or My Emotions?
Ask yourself:
1. Does this align with Scripture?
2. Does peace remain even after prayer?
3. Is this drawing me closer to Christ or just relieving discomfort?
4. Is this consistent, or emotionally reactive?
5. Would obedience still be right even if I didn’t feel like it?
📜 Bold Declaration (Shareable)
I do not live by feelings—I live by the Spirit.
My emotions submit to truth.
The Holy Spirit leads me in peace, clarity, and obedience.
I walk by faith, not by sight.
✨ Final Truth
• The Spirit leads upward
• Emotions pull sideways
• The flesh pulls downward
Mature believers learn to feel emotions, but follow the Spirit.
🕊️John 4:24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
