I had a coach (that I played for from 12-15 years old) that approached us all with curiosity first. He didn't start with the "because I said so" perspective of coaching (although we got to that point a few times) but instead started by asking us questions. Things like what we were trying to accomplish when we made that choice, how we were feeling, what else we could have done, etc. That curiosity-first mentality is something I bring into my teaching and coaching every day and feel it does wonders not only to build connection but mainly self-confidence (instead of students/players falling back on the old standby "I don't know how to ___").
