Underperforming Ads?
Hi @John Casto , For the first time, I’m taking my creative testing process very seriously following your creative testing framework, and over the past few days, I’ve been working hard to get everything in order for this new round of testing I’m about to start (80 ads total). I wanted to ask you a specific question about when to kill underperforming ads. If an ad spends 1.5x or 2x the expected CPL without showing any positive signs of success, do you kill the ad for good, or just pause it for the day and try again the next day? If you revisit it, how many chances do you usually give an ad before deciding it’s a no-go? The reason I’m asking is that I’m testing 80 ads in one campaign for the first time, and I’m a bit worried about managing my budget efficiently. Thanks in advance for your advice—I really appreciate it!

@John Casto Thanks, John, I really appreciate your reply and insights—it’s super helpful to hear how you approach ad performance rules. I’ve been trying to crack solar lead gen for a few weeks now, and since I’m still relatively new to that vertical, I’m trying to get a better idea of what decent KPIs look like (CPLs, CPCs, etc.). I just finished testing my first concept with 20 ads, and out of those, only one has converted so far, generating two leads at a $15 CPL, which is basically break-even for me at $30 revenue/ad spend. The other ads didn’t convert, but they had link clicks ranging between $1.50 and $3.50, with a link click CTR of 4%+. I know solar is competitive, but I’m curious—based on your experience, do these metrics seem promising, or should I be aiming for something different in this vertical? Any advice on optimizing for solar specifically would mean a lot! Affiliate marketing is definitely not for the weak, lol.

@Vic M Hey Manny, thank you for the kind words! For this test, I was aiming for a $15-18 CPL, so I set my budget at roughly 1.5-2x that. I spent an average of $30 per ad set. Since the results were poor across the board, I decided to shift to a new vertical to continue testing.
