By fifty-five, most of us are wearing ten coats. And we wonder why everything feels heavy. I keep thinking about that scene in every Christmas movie where the mother bundles the kid up for the snow. Hat, scarf, two sweaters, mittens, boots, coat on top. The kid can barely bend an arm. Waddles down the driveway like a little astronaut. That is what most successful fifty-year-olds look like from the inside. The credentials are the coats. So is the expertise. So is the reputation you have spent twenty years protecting. Every one of them kept you warm at some point. Every one of them is also a layer between you and the world. Here is what the layers cost. Not money. Range. You stop trying things you might be bad at. You stop saying the half-formed idea out loud. You stop meeting people who have nothing to offer you. You stop being surprised. You become harder to offend and harder to reach. Safer and smaller. So here is the practice, and it is not a metaphor. Take off a layer this week. One. Not all ten. Call the person you have been meaning to call and say the real thing instead of the update. Take the class where you will be the worst one in the room. Go somewhere you cannot read the menu. Say the idea out loud before it is finished. Ask the question you have been too credentialed to ask. Then watch three things. How the world looks. How people treat you. How you show up.
