The semi colon makes it very hard to understand the plot of the paragraph but I’m picking it up as, this guy felt paralyzed when talking to the boss and he felt good about not talking (you can also interpret it as he liked the uncomfortableness of being out of his social comfort zone) so he went home and relaxed and the but of challenge made him at ease with himself so he wouldn’t push himself further and he day dreams and the cycle goes on
