🔬 The Truth About Fussy Eating — Part 3: Getting Enough Nutrition From a Very Small List of Foods
We've reframed fussy eating, and we've looked at gently expanding the safe-food list. But here's the question that keeps parents awake: "In the meantime — is my child actually getting what they need?" This is my home turf, so let's talk about it honestly. As always: general educational information, not individual advice. Every child is different. 😥 First — the worry itself Almost every parent I speak to carries some version of this guilt: they're living on beige, and I can't fix it. So let me say clearly — expanding a child's diet is slow, gentle work, and while that unfolds, there is real value in making the foods they do accept work harder. That's not a compromise. It's good, sensible nutrition strategy, and it's something you can start today. 🧱 The principle: work with the list, not against it Instead of mourning the foods they won't eat, we look at the ones they will — and ask: can this same food, in the same form, carry a little more? Three levers do most of the work: 🥛 1. Upgrade what's already there (same food, better version) The most powerful move, because nothing on the plate looks different: 🔹 Full-fat dairy instead of low-fat — more energy and fat-soluble vitamins, same taste and appearance. 🔹 Fortified cereals over unfortified ones — many are fortified with iron and B vitamins. 🔹 A wholemeal or half-and-half version of a bread they accept, if the texture passes. 🔹 Cooking in olive oil or butter rather than nothing — free extra energy and fats. 🥄 2. Fortify quietly within accepted foods This is the legitimate kind of "hiding" — adding nutrition to a food they already accept, without changing what it fundamentally is (unlike sneaking in a new taste, which we said breaks trust): 🔹 Full-fat milk powder or cream cheese stirred into mashed potato or a favourite sauce. 🔹 Ground seeds or nut butter blended into a smoothie, porridge or bake they already love. 🔹 Red lentils or blended veg cooked into a pasta sauce they already eat (blended smooth so the texture and colour stay familiar).

Last week we reframed fussy eating: not naughtiness, but real sensory and neurological differences — and we landed on the golden rule, lower the pressure. This week, the practical bit: how to gently start expanding the safe-food list, working with your child's sensory world instead of against it. As always: general educational information, not individual advice. Every child is different. 🎨 The big idea: eating is the last step, not the first Here's a principle that sits at the heart of the specialist feeding approaches (like the Sequential Oral Sensory — "SOS" — approach, developed by feeding specialists): a child doesn't go from "won't touch it" to "eats it" in one leap. There's a whole ladder of steps in between — tolerating a food nearby, looking at it, touching it, smelling it, kissing it, licking it — long before biting or eating. Every rung is a genuine win. When we only count "ate it" as success, we miss all the quiet progress happening underneath. So the goal shifts from "get them to eat it" to "help them feel safe and curious around it." That reframe takes the pressure off both of you. 🖐️ Practical, no-pressure ways to climb the ladder: 🔹 Make food play, not a test. Exploring food with hands — sorting, stacking, squishing, making faces on a plate — lets a child get comfortable with textures and smells with no expectation of eating. For sensory-sensitive kids, touch is a huge, safe first step. Messy play with food outside of mealtimes counts too. 🔹 Build "food chains" from safe foods. Start from what they already love and make tiny, tiny changes. Loves a specific plain cracker? Try a very similar one — same shape, slightly different brand — then one with a faint flavour, and so on. You're bridging in baby steps from the safe food, not introducing something alien. 🔹 Same food, tiny tweaks. If they eat one brand of chicken nugget, that's your anchor. Over time, a slightly different shape, then a different make, then a homemade version that looks similar. Small enough that each step barely registers as "new."

🔬 NEW SERIES: The Truth About Fussy Eating — Part 1: Why It's Not What You Think
We've spent weeks on gut health and sleep. Now I want to turn to the thing I get asked about more than anything else — the daily, exhausting reality of feeding a child who eats from a tiny list of "safe" foods. As always: this is general educational information, not individual advice. Every child is different. 🍽️ First, the reframe that changes everything If you take one thing from this post, let it be this: extreme fussy eating in our children is almost never naughtiness, defiance, or "bad habits" — and it is not a sign you've done something wrong. There is real biology and neurology underneath it. Understanding that doesn't magically fix mealtimes, but it lifts the guilt — and it changes how we approach it, which matters enormously. 🧠 What's actually going on underneath "Fussy eating" is an umbrella covering several very real things: 🔹 Sensory processing. For many neurodiverse children, taste, smell, texture and even the look of food are experienced far more intensely. A texture that's mildly unpleasant to us can be genuinely overwhelming to them. Refusing isn't fussiness — it's a nervous system saying "this is too much." 🔹 The safety of "sameness." Predictable, familiar foods (often beige, dry, uniform) feel safe. In an unpredictable world, a known food is one thing a child can control and trust. That's not stubbornness — it's regulation. 🔹 Interoception. Some children experience hunger and fullness signals differently, which affects appetite and willingness to try foods. 🔹 When it's more than fussy: ARFID. Sometimes restricted eating is significant enough to be recognised as ARFID (Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder) — a genuine feeding difficulty, not a phase. If eating is severely limited, causing weight or nutrition concerns, or huge distress, that's worth raising with your GP or a feeding specialist — it deserves proper support, not pressure. 🌱 The golden rule before any strategy: lower the pressure Here's the counter-intuitive bit that decades of feeding research point to: pressure backfires. Bribing, forcing, "just one bite," bargaining — these tend to make food more stressful and safe foods feel less safe, narrowing the diet further. The single most powerful first step isn't a clever trick — it's taking the tension out of mealtimes. A calm table, no pressure to eat, food simply offered and available. It sounds too gentle to work. It's the foundation everything else is built on.

🔬 DELVING DEEPER: Screens & Sleep — More Than Just "Too Much Telly"
We've looked at the building blocks of sleep, light and the body clock, the nervous system, and blood sugar. This week we tackle the one almost every parent wrestles with: screens. And I want to go beyond the usual "too much screen time" — because the why is more interesting, and more useful, than the guilt. A quick note as always: this is general educational information, not individual advice. Every child is different. 📱 Three separate ways screens affect sleep "Screens are bad for sleep" is true but unhelpful — because screens affect sleep in three different ways, and understanding which is at play helps you decide what actually to change. 💡 1. The light. We covered this in our body-clock week: screens are bright and blue-rich, and in the evening that light can signal "it's still daytime" to the brain, nudging back the natural wind-down. This is the physical effect. 🧠 2. The stimulation. This is the big one, and the one most missed. Fast-paced games, videos and endless scrolling light up the "alert, go, do" nervous system — the exact opposite of the calm, "rest" gear we need for sleep (remember the wind-down runway?). A child can put the tablet down and still be revved for a long while after. It's not the screen in their hand at bedtime that's the problem so much as the activated nervous system it leaves behind. 🎯 3. The pull. Many games and apps are designed to be hard to stop — the "just one more level" hook. For neurodiverse children, who can experience intense focus and find transitions genuinely hard, that pull can be especially strong. So the bedtime battle isn't defiance; it's a child whose brain is caught in something engineered to hold it. 🛠️ Gentle things to explore (all free): 🔹 A "screen sunset." Aim to switch screens off a set time before bed — even 30–60 minutes helps — so the nervous system has a runway to slow down. The gap matters more than the exact timing. 🔹 Swap the type, not just the time. If a full stop is impossible (and for many of our kids it is), a gentle shift helps: from fast, stimulating content to something slower and calmer in the last stretch — a familiar quiet show, an audiobook, calm music. You're lowering the stimulation, not fighting for zero.

🔬 RESEARCH DROP: Probiotics — What They Are, What They're Not, and How to Think About Them
Welcome back to our weekly research post, where I take the science and translate it into plain English — so you don't have to wade through journals at midnight. I promised a proper look at probiotics, because it's one of the questions I get asked most. So let's cut through the hype — honestly. As always: this is general educational information, not individual advice. Anything specific to your child is best looked at with someone who can see their full picture. 🦠 First — what actually IS a probiotic? A probiotic is live beneficial bacteria (and sometimes yeasts) in supplement form — the idea being to add helpful microbes to the gut community we talked about last week. You'll also hear "prebiotic" (the fibres that feed good bacteria) and "synbiotic" (a combination of both). Worth knowing the difference, because the labels use them loosely. 🔬 What the research actually says (the honest version) Here's where I'll be straight with you, because there's a lot of hype in this area. Probiotics are a genuine field of scientific interest, with promising research in some specific situations. But — and it's a big but — the science is far more nuanced than the marketing suggests: 🔹 Strain-specific is everything. "Probiotics" isn't one thing. Different strains (not just species) do completely different jobs — a strain studied for one purpose tells you nothing about a different strain for another. The number on the label ("10 billion!") matters far less than which specific strains, and whether those have been studied. 🔹 Quality varies enormously. Some products don't contain what the label claims, or the bacteria aren't alive by the time they're used. Storage, packaging and manufacturing all matter. 🔹 It's highly individual. Because every child's gut community is unique, the same probiotic can help one child, do nothing for another, and unsettle a third.
