Your First 1,000 Subscribers Are Worth More Than You Think
One of the biggest mistakes new local publishers make is looking at subscriber count instead of subscriber value. They celebrate hitting 500 subscribers, then wonder why they aren’t making any money. Or they obsess over getting to 10,000 subscribers before trying to sell advertising. That’s backwards. A single local subscriber can be surprisingly valuable, even long before your list becomes “big.” Let’s do some simple math. Imagine you grow a newsletter to 5,000 local subscribers. If roughly half of them open each issue, that’s around 2,500 people seeing your content every week. With just two advertising positions in each newsletter, it’s entirely realistic to generate several hundred dollars per send. Over the course of a year, that works out to roughly $7 or more in annual revenue per subscriber, before you’ve even added additional products. Now think about what happens when that subscriber enters your complete local advertising ecosystem. That same person might also: - Receive your 9x12 postcard game in the mail. - Play one of your local challenges. - Redeem an offer from a local business. - Visit your community directory. - Follow your social media pages. - Attend one of your live events. - Participate in seasonal promotions. - Share your content with friends and neighbors. Suddenly, that subscriber isn’t just an email address. They’re part of a local audience that businesses desperately want to reach. This is where Town Publisher becomes different from almost every newsletter business being taught online. Most newsletter creators have one product to sell: newsletter sponsorships. You have an entire local advertising ecosystem. Every subscriber creates opportunities across multiple channels. Every advertiser has multiple ways to reach that same local audience. Instead of trying to squeeze more revenue out of one product, you’re building a business where each additional product increases the value of every subscriber you’ve already earned.

Exclusivity is the Secret Sauce
One of the biggest mistakes new Town Publishers make is thinking they’re selling postcards, newsletters, or games. They’re not. They’re selling something most local businesses have almost never been offered. Exclusivity. Think about the average local business owner. They run a Facebook ad. So does the competitor down the street. They boost an Instagram post. Their competitor does too. They both show up in Google search results, fighting over the same customer at the same moment. Every platform makes more money when multiple businesses compete for the same attention. The business owner pays more, the platform wins, and nobody owns the market. As a Town Publisher, you have the opportunity to offer something completely different. Instead of selling another advertising spot, you’re selling category ownership. One roofer. One chiropractor. One real estate agent. One HVAC company. One pizza place. When a household opens your Play My Town postcard, there isn’t a page full of competing roofers. There isn’t a sidebar with five other realtors. That business owns the category on that card. The same principle can extend across your entire local media ecosystem. Your newsletter. Your directory. Your City Games sponsorships. Your live events. Instead of selling endless inventory, you’re building long-term partnerships with businesses that want to own a position in the minds of local residents. That’s a fundamentally different conversation. You’re no longer asking, “Would you like to buy an ad?” You’re asking, “Would you like to become the exclusive roofer for East Grand Rapids before someone else does?” Scarcity changes everything. Business owners understand that if there’s only one available position, waiting has consequences. Once it’s filled, it’s gone until that partner leaves. That’s one of the reasons this model creates stronger relationships than traditional advertising. You’re not constantly replacing advertisers. You’re helping businesses defend a position they’ve earned.

@Ariel Levit it can be! You can use your own brand or work with the Play My Town brand. Either way, I can help you turn your postcard into a game to increase engagement and reach.
Welcome to Town Publisher
*START HERE* This isn’t just another community where you sit on the sidelines and watch video tutorials. We are here to build together. Whether you are launching a co-op 9x12 oversized postcard project, setting up local email newsletters, building directories, or deploying gamification strategy to lock down your territory, we are building real, revenue-generating media assets side-by-side. Why This Community? - 30 Years of Street-Tested Experience: I’ve spent three decades in the trenches of ad sales. I’ve made the calls, faced the objections, closed the deals, and built massive local footprints. You aren't learning from a theorist; you’re learning from someone who has actually been there and sold it. - Actual, No-Fluff Sales Training: Strategy is great, but execution is what pays the bills. You will get raw, practical sales training focused on how to approach local business owners, how to pitch local advertising programs, and exactly how to close the deal. - A True Builder's Community: You are surrounded by a tribe of action-takers who share what’s working right now. We celebrate the wins, troubleshoot the roadblocks, and hold each other accountable to one goal: **owning your local ad market**. Your Next Steps: 1. **Introduce Yourself:** Drop a post in the community letting us know your city and what local media asset you want to build first. 2. **Dive into the Classroom:** Check out the foundational training to map out your territory. 3. **Get Ready to Build:** This is a roll-up-your-sleeves environment. Let’s get to work and claim your local empire. Glad to have you here! Let's build something massive together.

@Jenny Bonham FB are the fastest path to growth, for sure. Definitely test different creative. A lot of sources will tell you video is the way to go, but it’s not always the case. The best way to know is to test on a nice conservative daily budget. Even $5 a day and only filter for location. Let Meta’s Advantage+ targeting do the work. I’ve been trying to get my acquisition cost down. I’m stalled out around $0.85-ish per subscriber, But, it’s trending down, so I’m encouraged.
