Learn any cool history lately? (Plus a question about Mary I)
This post is less about any history I've learned, and more about history I'd like to learn. I just read this article about a book that once belonged to 'Bloody Mary', Queen Mary I: A Collection of Maps Owned by Englandโ€™s First Queen Spent Centuries Overlooked in a Family Library. Now, the Rare Volume Is on Sale for $1.6 Million So this led me down a little rabbit hole, reading about her. Clearly a fascinating, controversial, and tragic figure... Can you recommend a book about Mary I? Fiction or non-fiction. If it's non-fiction, it needs to be beginner level rather than scholarly โ€” readable, not too detailed, and not too long ๐Ÿ˜‚ Have you learned any interesting historical tidbits recently?

@Jane Cairns I subscribed! I'm Beyond the Grind Life on Substack (and I spent my elementary school years in Canaan, NH).

@Zena Ryder There were some supernatural references in that book, but I think that was the time period. England was heavily influenced by the beliefs of supernatural forces. https://www.philippagregory.com/news/the-true-stories-behind-the-white-queen

Sometimes it's not the book -- it's me. If I cannot get into a book, I'll read something completely different then come back around.
UPDATED: Group Read of Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke
The premise of Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke grabbed me: A tradwife social media influencer who wakes up one morning in the actual 1855! Enough of us are interested that we can make this work. Iโ€™ve bought a copy, but Iโ€™ll wait to read it until more of you have your hands on it. Weโ€™ll aim to discuss around the end of May. (Either by zoom or by text in here, weโ€™ll see.) Apparently, if you have a paid Spotify account, it's available as an audiobook! Itโ€™s also on Audible. Article about the book: https://www.motherjones.com/media/2026/04/trad-wife-caro-claire-burke-yesteryear-hannah-neeleman-anne-hathaway/
