I love growing flowers. In Massachusetts I had a beautiful garden. But Iโ€™m in Oregon now and I have an apartment so Iโ€™m very limited. I have a few pots outside my door and thatโ€™s all I can do. So I got a bleeding heart growing, some Caladium on the way cause itโ€™s all shady where I am and Iโ€™ll be growing impatient. I havenโ€™t figured out what else I wanna grow this year.
๐ŸŒฑ Container Soil & Drainage Mastery Week โ€“ Day 5 of 5 The Perfect Container Soil Mix (Simple Recipe for Strong Roots)
All week weโ€™ve talked about structure, drainage, and oxygen. Now letโ€™s answer the big question: What does a good container mix actually look like? Spoiler: itโ€™s not about fancy ingredients. Itโ€™s about balance. ๐ŸŒฟ ๐“๐ก๐ž ๐†๐จ๐š๐ฅ: ๐Œ๐จ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž + ๐€๐ข๐ซ Healthy container soil should: * Hold moisture * Drain freely * Allow air pockets * Resist compaction Youโ€™re aiming for sponge-like, not muddy, not dusty. For most houseplants: * 2 parts quality potting mix * 1 part perlite (or pumice) Thatโ€™s it. This improves drainage immediately without making soil dry too fast. ๐ŸŒธ ๐…๐จ๐ซ ๐Ž๐ฎ๐ญ๐๐จ๐จ๐ซ ๐‚๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐š๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ (๐’๐ฉ๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  & ๐’๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ž๐ซ) Outdoor pots dry faster, so they need a slightly different balance: * 2 parts potting mix * 1 part compost * 1 part perlite or coarse material This holds nutrients while still draining well. Try: * 2 parts potting mix * 1 part perlite * ยฝ part coarse sand or fine bark Most herbs dislike constantly damp roots. After watering: * Water should drain within seconds * Soil shouldnโ€™t stay soupy * Pot shouldnโ€™t feel heavy for days * Roots should look white and firm when repotting If water pools or lingers, structure needs adjusting. Avoid: * Garden soil (too dense) * Straight compost (compacts easily) * Rocks in the bottom (this doesnโ€™t improve drainage) Yesโ€ฆ that last one is a myth. Drainage holes + airy mix matter far more. ๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง Plants donโ€™t struggle because you didnโ€™t fertilize enough. They struggle when roots canโ€™t breathe. Get the mix right, and everything else becomes easier. Thatโ€™s the quiet power of soil mastery ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ’š Do you mix your own soilโ€ฆ or use straight potting mix? ๐ŸŒฟ I mix ๐Ÿชด I buy ready-made ๐Ÿค” I might try mixing now

Iโ€™m making my own this year for the first time since I lived in this apartment. My plants just have not been thriving in the store-bought potting soil so Iโ€™ve been disappointed. So Iโ€™m gonna garden like I used to garden in my old house in Massachusetts.
