Have you ever????
Have you ever gone through your collected music and discovered or rediscovered gems that you might have overlooked or forgotten about? I've been preparing records for a four hour set I'm playing in Shoreditch next week and got totally derailed discovering some fantastic house, soul and jazz music lol. This was one of the records I discovered. From the legend that is Omar! https://www.discogs.com/release/956002-Omar-Your-Loss-My-Gain Am I the only one this has happened to?? I'd love to hear your stories on what beautiful music has been unearthed and rediscovered from your music collection.

Yes! This happens to me all the time, but with my old R&B and neo-soul collection. I’ll be going through my music and suddenly rediscover something like Floetry or Jill Scott that I haven’t played in years and it hits completely different now. It’s like you appreciate the artistry and the production so much more with time and life experience. Songs that were just background music before suddenly have layers you never caught. Love that you found Omar - that’s a proper gem! Good luck with the Shoreditch set! 🎶
An old song can become a new conversation
I don't know if you've noticed but music can have the ability to grow with us. For example, a song you may have belted out without a second thought at 16 might just move you in a different way at 40. Or a track that you once noticed the vibe and melody only, now reveal more layers that you misses before! Sometimes it's about what's happening in our lives when this song comes up again. If you're a dj or selector, you might suddenly hear the arrangement or production choices. Our ears change, our hearts change and suddenly an old familiar song becomes a completely new conversation. What's a song that means something completely different to you now than when you first heard it? 🤔

“Tempted to Touch” by Beres Hammond When I first heard this as a teenager, it was just a sweet love song with that signature Beres smoothness; something to sway to at a dance or hum along with in the car. But hearing it now? It hits completely different. There’s a vulnerability and restraint in it that I didn’t catch before. The longing, the discipline, the almost of it all. At 16 or rather much younger, I heard romance or rather you just singing the tune because it nice to vibe to because it was always being played around you. Now I hear emotional maturity, boundaries, and the tension between what you want and what you know is right. And musically? I notice the space he leaves in the arrangement now – how much power there is in what he doesn’t say, what the band doesn’t play. That restraint mirrors the lyrical content perfectly, and I completely missed that layer before. There are so many of those songs but I chose that one. Songs really do grow with us. 😬

Hey everyone! I’m Tanesha from Clapham, London 🇬🇧 Music has always been my soul food. I grew up surrounded by reggae, soul, metal 🎸, country, gospel music, disco, R&B and house and I’ve always been that person creating playlists for every vibe and moment. There’s something about how the right track can completely shift the energy in a room that’s always fascinated me. By day, I run a wellness studio as a trichology practitioner and hairdresser, but music is where I go to recharge and connect. I’ve been wanting to properly learn to DJ for years and finally decided to stop dreaming about it and actually start! Complete beginner here, but I’m ready to learn, experiment and have fun with it. Excited to be part of this community and soak up all the knowledge you’re willing to share. Let’s go! 🎶✨💙💚💚💙
