🐾 Have You Ever Wondered Why One Dog Thrives with an Approach That Completely Fails Another? I recently had the privilege of speaking at the 3rd Dog Lovers Festival inside the Heart-Led Dog Lovers Community, and the replay is now available throughout June. In my presentation: What “Type” of Dog Do You Have? How Understanding Personality Improves Behaviour, Calm, and Connection I explore why dogs respond differently based on their unique personality, emotional needs, and natural tendencies—and how understanding those differences can help reduce stress, improve behaviour, and deepen trust. Many behaviour challenges are not about "bad dogs." They are often the result of misunderstood needs, nervous system overload, or expecting every dog to thrive in the same way. If you've ever found yourself wondering: 🐾 Why does my dog react so differently than other dogs? 🐾 Why do some approaches work beautifully for one dog and not another? 🐾 Is there a deeper way to understand what my dog needs? Then I think you'll enjoy this conversation. The festival also features many other heart-led speakers sharing their insights on creating healthier, happier, more connected relationships with our dogs. You can access the festival community here:https://gokollab.com/heart-led-dog-lover/home Once inside, simply type "Arlana" into the search bar to find my presentation replay. I'd love to hear your thoughts and insights after you've watched it. #DogLoversFestival #HeartLedDogs #DogBehaviour #DogWellness #AnimalCompanions #MovingBeyondWords #CalmConnectionTrust

I wouldve enjoyed your live presentation. I hope to be at the next one.
The Biological Connection that affects both Human and Companion
Have you ever noticed your animal companion reacting to your stress… even before you realized how overwhelmed you were yourself? Animals are constantly responding to nervous system cues, emotional tension, routine changes, and the overall energy within the home. Sometimes what looks like “behavior issues” is actually stress, uncertainty, emotional overload, or dysregulation being shared within the relationship itself. What they are "feeling" or "expressing" can be rooted in their perception of our emotional, mental and physical state as well. Calm spreads. Stress spreads too. This is one reason I believe behavior challenges can’t always be looked at in isolation. The emotional connection between guardian and animal matters more than many people realize. When we begin creating more safety, calm, regulation, and understanding within ourselves and our environment, our animals often respond in powerful ways. 🐾 Have you ever noticed your animal companion mirroring your emotional state or responding to tension in the environment? Or have you experienced a moment where calm, presence, or connection shifted behavior more than correction did? I’d love to hear your experiences below. (There’s also a deeper discussion inside the Classroom section exploring connection, stress, and the missing link in holistic wellness.)

I do know that my dog Aura comes along for the emotional rides my energy takes. In that I take care of her as she takes care of me.

What does Safety look like?
There was a time when I thought helping an animal feel “safe” simply meant meeting their physical needs. Food. Exercise. Training. Routine. But over the years, I began noticing something deeper. Some animals had everything they were “supposed” to need… and yet still seemed anxious, reactive, shut down, hypervigilant, or unable to fully relax. What changed the relationship wasn’t more control. It was emotional safety. Slowing down. Listening differently. Reducing pressure. Creating trust through consistency, presence, and understanding instead of correction alone. Sometimes behavior is not asking to be fixed. Sometimes it is asking:....“Do I feel safe enough to soften here?” I’d love to hear your thoughts or experiences around this. Have you ever noticed your animal companion responding differently when they felt truly safe, understood, or emotionally supported? 🐾 What was it that you think that made them felt truly safe?

I think energy is so important to safety. Animals feel this energy and it effects how they interact with you and other animals. They are highly energetic sensative. I sometimes think that people dont know this or understand it. There are lots of people who do understand energy fields, emotions and the needs of their pets. Those people could teach their friends about it.
Welcome—I'm really glad you're here 🤍
This space was created for those who feel there is something deeper in the relationship with their animal companion… something beyond training, beyond surface-level solutions. If you’ve ever felt confused, frustrated, or simply sensed that your animal is trying to communicate something more—you’re not alone. My work over the past 30+ years has shown me that true change doesn’t come from control… it comes from understanding, awareness, and connection. Here, we’ll explore that together. You’ll find insights, reflections, and simple ways to begin seeing your animal—and your relationship—in a new light. There’s nothing you need to “do” right away. Just start noticing. ✨ To begin, I’d love to hear from you: What has been the most confusing or challenging part of your relationship with your animal companion lately? (And if you feel called, let me know what kind of animal you share your life with 🐾 and if you are comfortable, share a photo too please 🐾) — If you didn’t leave your email when joining and would like to receive updates or resources as this space grows, feel free to share it with me or send it privately.

Aura my dog is my child . Her and I are riding the same energetic flow. Her and I both love deeply and are stuborn lol. Since Aura was born she has been stuborn and only wants to be petted and cuddled when she wants to be. She will ignore or walk away from being held . Then there is the flip side. She will follow me all over our home. She listens very well and obey commands to sit etc for treats. She loves our walks and car rides in her car seat. Her breeder told me she preffered lying on her own since she was born. I always wonder if she was crowded by her sister inside her mommas womb.

Being a human with allergies to perfumes and scents in household cleaners , detergents and air fresheners. I am as diligent as I can be not to be around scents while living in my apartment. This can be impossible at times. For Aura my dog I try very hard to not have scented shampoos etc for her as well. Both her and I suffer from dripping noses , watery eyes all the time and sensitive skin. Thank you so much for this article.
