"The Classroom" Aka Learning Lab
Hey all, we have plans to create a digital extension of Pachena Bay as well as add some info to the long shot learning lab for those who are interested in knowing more about HOW & WHY we do this work. At the moment that section is fairly dorment aside from some personal writings. As time moves forward we will be looking at ways of offering educational content with different presentions and classes held in this section by any number of people and topics (related to community building and music) Have any of you done much online workshops, classes or other interesting ways to learn indivigally and also as a group digitally? This platform has a decent live hangout where we could enable mic and video for group interaction. We are serious about building this site together and interested in your experiences with digital learning. Good and bad of course.

Also love this. As mentioned in our private message I started a platform on Heartbeat and I had one online course written and going. I've done many live zoom courses with much success. I had about 15 people in the platform. I had a little bit of engagement. I started writing another course and invited two other practitioners and this is when I realized just how much work goes into making this sellable. If you're including this in the membership levels, then I think they can be simple to complex. Otherwise, it's a much bigger endeavour. So I started an online course writing / selling - course. The first pdf workbook I filled in to write a DJ course, which is in the works, was full on. It took me days to fill in just the basic questions and drill down my why, who I was selling to and why would someone pay me money for things people can likely find on their own or say buy in Crossfader or other DJ schools. I pulled back, to give myself time, because I want to write a course that is not only valuable but so juicy there is no denying whether it's a course for "you" or not. I can see areas of other courses that don't offer what I can, so I likely have found a niche. A big part of this will be community (as you know). People are looking for it. Craving it. I realized that even though people can purchase anytime and go at their own pace, they are still going to want a community / accountability / rewards etc. So I will offer a live aspect as well, perhaps a monthly Q & A and similar to what you are doing with the weekly ticket draws. I also chose the option, to send someone reminders to move onto their next step (which they could opt out of). It really depends on so many variables. I like the candid approach to developing a course but I also like a well designed, thought out course. My hope is to have easy-to-complete courses and then upgrade to more in depth, deep dive courses. I'm giving myself a lot of time to do this now. There are grants and ways to raise money and / or invite guest teachers into your platform and offer trades or profit sharing /affiliate opportunities etc.
Salty Hearts Music Festival (May 1/2 2026)
(Wanted to throw this one to the network for feedback) Let's talk about Salty, coming up on May 1–2. Last year, we braved one of Bamfield’s biggest early spring storms in March and still delivered an amazing event that the locals and many enjoyed. We have had requests locally to do it again. Yes, we had a few hiccups—like that hotel hot water situation and some production issues due to weather and fatigue—but in the end, everyone had a fantastic time. Last year, as a first-year festival, we ended up in the red financially. We want to avoid that this year. That’s part of the reason we’ve shifted the date from mid-March to May. It’s a significant change in timing, and we’re hoping it makes a big difference. Ultimately, the event’s viability really depends on about 60–70% of attendees being up for camping at Pachena Bay. May 1–2 is still in the shoulder season, so camping and rental costs are much lower than during Pachena. A few thoughts we’ve been having about what contributed to the difficulty in attendance: - The time of year was brutal. The weather was nasty, so no last min fomo sales - Lots of local accommodations weren’t available due to it being too early - Spring break and it being 19plus - We focused on live music more (due to being in the middle of Bamfield with the main stage and wanting to design an event more akin to Woodstove or Song & Surf) The changes (for those who were there) would be: - Way better time of year - Triple the production down at Pachena and making the campsite a much bigger focus with lots to do - Bringing in a bit more electronic music to the campsite and throughout - Opening up the event to all ages I’d love to hear your feedback and thoughts on how to make this year’s edition stronger and more sustainable. Let’s make it happen. Cheers, Ben

We considered going as well but couldn't make it work financially. We can't wait to experience Banfield and have a place to stay, so likely can actually make it now!
Steal Like An Artist
This past spring I held an online book club and the book we used was called Steal Like An Artist by Austin Kleon. I also listened to the audiobook which took just over 30 minutes to go through. So... he packaged 3 books as a trilogy. Each of those books, also take less than an hour to read / listen to. I read so many rave reviews... I keep the books close, plus his mini workbook, to keep me inspired. It's so freeing to accept that to be creative, we don't have to reinvent the wheel, instead build on the work that came before us. I always give credit where credit is due, so thank you to everyone who have put in the blood, sweat and tears to curate and co-create events, to build the dancefloors, who write the music, who bring community to-gather! https://austinkleon.com/2010/02/10/25-quotes-to-help-you-steal-like-an-artist/
