๐ŸŒพ Gratitude Grows Here: A Gardenerโ€™s Reflection for Thanksgiving Day
Thanksgiving is more than a feast, itโ€™s a feeling. Itโ€™s the moment when we slow down, look around, and realize how much weโ€™ve cultivated, not just in our gardens but in our lives. For container gardeners, the harvest might not fill a barn or a pantry, but it fills something even more important: our hearts. Every seed that sprouted, every bloom that opened, and every tomato that ripened on the balcony reminds us that even in small spaces, abundance is possible. ๐ŸŒฟ ๐Ÿชด ๐€ ๐’๐ž๐š๐ฌ๐จ๐ง ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐†๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ญ๐ฎ๐๐ž โ€” ๐†๐š๐ซ๐๐ž๐ง ๐’๐ญ๐ฒ๐ฅ๐ž This time of year, while most gardens rest, we get the rare gift of reflection. Think back over your growing season, the moments that made you smile, the ones that challenged you, and the unexpected lessons your plants taught you along the way. Maybe your herbs thrived on a sunny windowsill. Maybe your cucumbers went wild in July. Or maybe you learned how to forgive yourself (and the weather) for the seedlings that didnโ€™t make it. Every gardenerโ€™s journey is a story of hope, patience, and renewal. Thanksgiving reminds us to celebrate the quiet victories and the beauty of persistence. ๐ŸŒป ๐†๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐“๐ก๐š๐ง๐ค๐ฌ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐๐š๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐žโ€™๐ฌ ๐„๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ฒ๐๐š๐ฒ ๐Œ๐š๐ ๐ข๐œ Even after the harvest, our gardens continue to give. ๐Ÿ‚ The crunch of fallen leaves underfoot becomes mulch for next seasonโ€™s soil. ๐ŸŒค๏ธ The low November sun paints every terracotta pot in gold. ๐Ÿ The last few bees linger near hardy blooms, reminding us how interconnected we all are. Itโ€™s a living cycle of generosity โ€” nature giving and gardeners receiving โ€” and that rhythm is something worth feeling grateful for every single day. Container gardeners know that gratitude doesnโ€™t require acres โ€” just awareness. Take a look at your own growing space: * The herbs that keep giving flavor long past summer. * The potted perennials still hanging on with green hope. * The soil thatโ€™s resting quietly, waiting to start fresh again. Each pot holds a story โ€” of growth, of care, and of the kind of small successes that often go unnoticed. Thanksgiving is the perfect time to notice them. ๐ŸŒฑ

๐ŸŒพ Container Gardening with Ornamental Grasses
When you think of container gardening, you might picture herbs, veggies, or colorful flowers. But donโ€™t overlook ornamental grasses โ€” they bring movement, texture, and a touch of drama to your patio or balcony pots, especially in the fall. Add vertical interest and contrast against leafy greens or blooms. Many grasses look good year-round, even in winter with their dried plumes. * ๐‹๐จ๐ฐ ๐Œ๐š๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐ง๐š๐ง๐œ๐ž: Most are hardy and drought-tolerant once established. Birds love the seed heads, and pollinators enjoy the blooms. ๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐ญ๐š๐ข๐ง ๐†๐ซ๐š๐ฌ๐ฌ (๐๐ž๐ง๐ง๐ข๐ฌ๐ž๐ญ๐ฎ๐ฆ) โ€“ Soft, arching plumes in pinks or purples. * ๐๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ž ๐…๐ž๐ฌ๐œ๐ฎ๐ž โ€“ Compact, spiky mounds with icy-blue color. * ๐‰๐š๐ฉ๐š๐ง๐ž๐ฌ๐ž ๐…๐จ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ ๐†๐ซ๐š๐ฌ๐ฌ (๐‡๐š๐ค๐จ๐ง๐ž๐œ๐ก๐ฅ๐จ๐š) โ€“ Elegant, cascading habit for shady spots. * ๐…๐ž๐š๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ซ ๐‘๐ž๐ž๐ ๐†๐ซ๐š๐ฌ๐ฌ (๐‚๐š๐ฅ๐š๐ฆ๐š๐ ๐ซ๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ฌ) โ€“ Tall, upright, and stunning in clusters. * ๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ž ๐Œ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ž๐ญ โ€“ Striking dark foliage and seed heads. ๐๐ฅ๐š๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐  & ๐‚๐š๐ซ๐ž ๐“๐ข๐ฉ๐ฌ ๐ŸŒฑ Pot Size: Choose a large container (at least 14โ€“16โ€ wide) to accommodate deep root systems. ๐ŸŒฑ Soil: Use a well-draining potting mixโ€”grasses donโ€™t like soggy feet. ๐ŸŒฑ Sunlight: Most grasses love full sun, though some (like Japanese forest grass) prefer partial shade. ๐ŸŒฑ Watering: Keep evenly moist until established, then water as neededโ€”donโ€™t overdo it. ๐ŸŒฑ Winter Care: Many grasses overwinter in containers; leave dried foliage for winter interest, then cut back in early spring. ๐ŸŒŸ ๐ƒ๐ž๐ฌ๐ข๐ ๐ง ๐ˆ๐๐ž๐š๐ฌ ๐“๐ก๐ซ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ž๐ซ ๐„๐ฅ๐ž๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ: Use tall grasses as the centerpiece in a mixed container. ๐“๐ž๐ฑ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž ๐‚๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐ฌ๐ญ: Pair with trailing ivy, petunias, or creeping Jenny. ๐…๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐ƒ๐ข๐ฌ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐š๐ฒ๐ฌ: Combine with mums, ornamental peppers, or pansies for seasonal flair. ๐Ÿ‚ ๐…๐ข๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐“๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ ๐ก๐ญ Ornamental grasses prove that container gardens arenโ€™t just about food or flowersโ€”theyโ€™re about style and personality, too. With their graceful sway and striking plumes, these plants can transform your space into a cozy autumn retreat.

Easter Cactus basking in AZ sun
This cactus has done so good in its clay planter. All those pups attached were put into their own pots to start new cactus. I must have two dozen pots started from all her babies.
