What sticks out to you in this clip?
One of my favorite speeches by him. I pull so many things from MLK Jr not just as a speaker but as a human being - asking questions, how to communicate ideas, seeing value in everyone even "enemies", mannerisms, the ability to sit in the silences, and the list goes on
MLK is one of the best orators ever known. He is from a tradition of black preachers that is stylized to capture not only the mind but the emotions unto the body. Within his cadence tones, movement and sound one is almost hypnotized as his command of the word takes form “catching you up”, hypnotizes and reverberates bouncing off walls, pews and bodies in which one can not escape due to being transfixed.

“even the hare though weak can bite.” for me it pertains to perceptions. how do we know the hare is week? as there are many folklores and myths that speak to its good luck, it’s fertility and tutelage as well as it’s arrogance and speed. i there one hare or many? with this how do we judge another or allow what was told to us allow misrepresentation”. how do we approach another, based upon stereotypes or another's experience ? most importantly, how do we shape inner wisdoms understanding that we have teeth too. i believe a common outlook would be what seems “innocent” “demure” has the potential to cause pain based upon one’s naivety/lack of understanding/knowing…and or openness and care. however this is still based upon ones perceptions and failure to be accountable for their inner landscape, and sight. shall we say thank god the bite will not be fatal…but it is a lesson. for whom?

the proverb has a particular point of view. the hare is the subject/ones gaze and the possible result -the bite(predicate)is a warning -to be watchful! i believe what is curious to me in this context is who is eyeing it? we do not know? animals have great sensitivities unlike humans. with this, i see the hare as the teacher. a teacher that gives one the opportunity to find ways of learning more about oneself and how we approach another. this takes great honesty, patience and observation. this quote sorta reminds me of a preacher (the hare) who asked a man to come up into the pulpit and hold a glass of water. the preacher began shaking the mans arms and the water came spilling out. the man gasped trying to avoid getting wet. then the preacher asked “why did you spill the water”? the man said because you shook my arm. the preacher laughed “ and said “no”. the man said oh, yes! the preacher turned to the congregation and said the water spilled out of the glass because it was in the glass. if there was no water in the glass it would not have come out.” the preacher was using the glass as a symbol of the body and the water as emotions, memory etc that is inside of us. therefore it did not matter who shook the mans arm or when(external circumstances/the bite) there was something inside of the man (not the preacher or the hare) it was what was inside the man that brings forth the consequence(the bite).
Group Name Change?
I want this community to be a space for artists, teachers, students, business leaders, and anyone who needs to use words impactfully. Whether through music, acting, sales, motivational speaking, class presentations, the goal is to sharpen how we use language to move people and create impact. So what are we thinking for the name? I’ll keep this poll open for a week, and then we’ll decide together.

i see that the power of words maybe best now that i have understanding about what the focus of the question really is. speaking with you all last evening we agreed that there are many ideas in the minds of others concerning “art”. i too feel the same about power. especially today when “power” is synonymous with corruption, domination and control(among the least of terms) nonetheless, it is still not quite original as it purports a singular /individual gain in structure. there have been many books concerning speech and oratory skills. maybe it is a metaphor or symbolic structuring of a term that can embody multiplicity or a duality that is softer and more malleable within power/art? We speak to impact -is something i feel is necessary in these times by bringing concerting voices together which allows inclusivity and not a hierarchal stance. maybe the we needs to be present?

My one-liner for the day is "readiness is not the goal-dedication is". I believe I will substitue the word dedication for devotion. The quote above had no author's signature but is present in personal/collective guidance and care.

Discussion Question: Why do you think I led them through this breathing practice at the start of this clip? 💎There’s a lot I could unpack in this clip — but one thing I rarely leave out of any keynote is this quote from Dr. Benjamin E. Mays, former president of Morehouse College and mentor to Dr. King: 🔑“Every man and woman is born into the world to do something unique and distinctive — and if he or she does not do it, it will never be done.” That quote moves me every time. Because creativity and entrepreneurship aren’t optional — we all have something we’re meant to create, build, or contribute. When I share that, I use my Nigerian accent. Not just for laughs or engagement — but to share my culture. 🔑That’s intrapersonal intelligence: knowing who you are and bringing your full self into the room. To other speakers, educators, and leaders: lean into your accent. Whether you’re from the South, London, Mexico, New York, or Canada — your accent is a door into your culture. And when you have people repeat after you in it? That’s an invitation into community. Don’t be afraid to let folks know if their attempt at the accent is trash — with love, of course. Laugh together. But never let it become a joke at the culture’s expense. Accents carry history. Power. Presence. Use them with respect and with purpose. And to keep the whole room locked in? That’s 🔑kinesthetic/🔑musical intelligence — clapping sequences that bring the group back together, center the energy, and refocus the moment.
