♟️ What Chess Opening Should I Play?
I’m completely new to chess and still figuring things out. What’s the best opening to start with that’s simple, easy to remember, and helps me learn the basics? Any tips from experienced players would be awes ome!

I disagree. At the “below 1000 ELO” you should simply focus on good moves and avoid hanging pieces and falling to take hanging pieces. If you can recognize an opportunity for a tactic then that is fantastic. Stay alert!

@Dr. Mike Jansen I understand the disagreement. But my coach (Dina) told me to focus on good moves and board vision and stop with the opening theory that I was spending tons of money and time on. It was a clarifying moment for me. I also found Aman Hambleton’s “Building Habits” series and immersed myself in it. It is in perfect alignment with what Dina told me I should be doing. I’m still too old and too slow to finish a 5 minute game, but the lessons are awesome and have definitely improved my game.

@Omar Roushdy I feel ya. I was on a surge upwards and stopped when I got over 800. I think I hit 842, but then my grandkid got on my chess.com acccount and lost a game for me. So despite that trauma I'm preparing for another round of games to see If I can get above 900. I'm confident I can do it, but I just need to make it happen. 😉

We need to talk.
Over the next few posts, we’re diving into the raw, real, beautiful beast that is Over-the-board chess. Not the fast-food dopamine-hit you get from blitzing online — but the real stuff. The kind that builds skill, breaks ego, and rewires your brain. Let’s start here: Online, you can survive on tricks. You can win on speed. You can pretend to know what you're doing and let the mouse do the rest. But classical OTB? You’re fully exposed. Every move echoes. Every choice matters. This is where you actually learn to play. Ask yourself: When was the last time you sat still, focused, and let your ideas unfold over hours — not seconds? Drop your answers in the comment section!

Easy answer for me. My very first and last OTB game was at the 2025 Charlotte Open. My next OTB game will probably be at the 2026 Charlotte Open. I really love my patterns of behavior.
🧠 Today’s Focus: Opening Prep!
Share in the comment below your go-to opening — white or black — and what you’re working on this week.
