Safe Communities Portugal: "EARTHQUAKE EXERCISE MAINLAND PORTUGAL - THE 12TH EDITION WILL TAKE PLACE ON 5TH NOVEMBER, AT 11:05 HRS" "Over the centuries, Portugal, which is situated in a moderate seismic hazard zone, has been hit by a number of major earthquakes. The regions of Lisbon and the Algarve are among those where earthquakes are most likely to occur, and are the ones that have seen the highest number of victims and considerable material damage. Although it is not possible to forecast earthquakes, being prepared will help reduce the impact. Securing items and furniture will help reduce potential injures which may fall or topple during and earthquake. As part of the exercise our suggestion is for each of us is BEING PREPARED - Make sure everyone knows in your family what to do in case an earthquake occurs. - HAVE AN EMERGENCY KIT, USEFUL FOR ANY EMERGENCY, IN CASE YOU HAVE TO LEAVE HOME SUDDENLY. - Have the telephone numbers of emergency services readily available in an accessible place A BASIC EMERGENCY KIT should comprise the following, but of course can be supplemented by other items as well: • First-aid kit; • Your usual medication; • Water and non-perishable food; • Personal hygiene products; • A change of clothes; • Radio, flashlight and whistle; • Money; • Family / friends contact list/copy important documents/back-up; USB stick and charger" (Based on ANEPC guidelines)
