Most people know Helen Keller as a woman who was deaf and blind. What many don’t realize is that she was also an author, lecturer, activist, and someone who spent her life challenging assumptions about what disabled people could accomplish. She once said: “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” As a blind person myself, I have a special fondness for Helen Keller. Not because she was extraordinary, but because she reminds us that disability does not diminish humanity, intelligence, purpose, or possibility. Fun fact: Helen Keller loved lions. In 1931, she attended a ceremony in New York where she commissioned a group of Lions Club members as “Knights of the Blind in the Crusade Against Darkness.” That tradition continues today. The Lions have become one of the world’s largest organizations supporting vision services, guide dogs, eye health, and blindness-related causes. As someone whose life has been touched by blindness, guide dogs, adaptive technology, and the support of others, I’m grateful for the people who help light the path. Today, let’s celebrate not only Helen Keller, but everyone who finds a way forward despite challenges others may never see. 💙 Affirmation: I honor my strengths, embrace my challenges, and trust my ability to create a meaningful life. 🌿 Reflection: What challenge in your life has helped you discover strengths you didn’t know you had?
