We are in the middle of a heatwave, and I know exactly what is happening in care settings across the country right now. You are making sure the residents have their cold drinks. You are monitoring the room temperatures. You are checking on the most vulnerable. You are following the heat policy to the letter. But when did YOU last have a glass of water? Here is your reminder — care workers and managers are just as vulnerable to dehydration and heat exhaustion as the people they support. And a dehydrated, overheated leader cannot make good decisions, cannot respond well under pressure and cannot give their best to anyone. So here are your heatwave rules for this week — for YOU: 💧 Drink water regularly — not just when you feel thirsty. By the time you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated. 🍧 Keep something cold nearby — ice water, a cool drink, whatever works for you 🧴 Wear light, breathable clothing where your role allows 🙊🏽♀️ Take your breaks — step somewhere cooler if you can, even for five minutes 🥵 Watch out for signs of heat exhaustion in yourself and your colleagues — headache, dizziness, fatigue and confusion 📵 Check on each other — not just the residents You cannot pour from an empty cup. And this week, in this heat, that is literally true. Stay cool, stay hydrated, stay safe. 💙 Drop a 💧 below if you are drinking water RIGHT NOW — go on, let’s see it! #CQCComplianceNetworkUK #Heatwave #StayHydrated #CareLife #YouMatter #UKCare #RegisteredManagers #HeatSafety #SelfCare #CareWellbeing
