Beginnings
Over the coming weeks, I'm going to be sharing weekly prompts, starting with this week, actually today. Let's get us writing, sharing and connecting. Thank you for those of you who have already been sharing your work and your ideas. @Naomi Inks @Anna Pearl @Carolyn Turner @Butterfly Writes and @Fierra Riley This is greatly appreciated. You've gotten us going... The prompt for this week 📖Write a poem or prose about the first thing you remember. It doesn't need to be dramatic. It could be the smell of a room, a pair of shoes, a voice, something simple. Begin there. I'll get us started with mine below in the chat box. Happy Writing📑

@Sandra Pollock On the surface my early childhood appears non-eventful. Many memories erased. And yet, it is the small things that remain. I remember our kitchen A bowl of cornflakes with warm milk The sweet taste of hot chocolate on my tongue Sharing a small space With mum, dad and my twin Cozy glow from the fire place Shielded from a winters rage The smell of freshly baked bread The crackle of firewood By Shirley Fifield

Hi, it was lovely seeing you and yours too 🙂
I Am Not My Past
You read my poems like evidence in a trial lining up my words as if healing were a crime. You say stop writing about yesterday as if yesterday didn’t carve me,as if pain should stay buried quiet, obedient, unseen. But my ink is not a confession it’s a release. Every line I write is something I chose not to become. You call it playing good, like kindness is a mask I wear instead of a choice I make every single day to not bleed on people who never cut me. Yes I have been broken. Yes I have made mistakes. But I am not standing here pretending to be perfect I’m standing here trying to be better. And that seems to bother you more than my past ever could. You hold old versions of me like they’re still alive, like I haven’t buried them with every tear, every lesson, every page I wrote just to survive. You don’t trust me I hear it in every accusation, every sharp word wrapped in hurt. But tell me how do I prove truth to someone who already decided I’m lying? How do I love in a place where I’m always on trial? So I write not because I’m stuck, but because I refuse to stay silent About the storm I walked through and the woman I became after. You see my past as destruction. I see it as proof that I’m still here. And no I won’t stop writing. Because my voice is the one thing I refuse to lose again. ~butterfly ~

Wow, I get that 👍🏾
Eulogies
When you are the person who gets the role to write and read all the eulogies when family members pass. An honour, a responsibility and .... I'm looking for the next word.

I'm good thanks Sandra. Not had as much time to put pen to paper as I would have liked but when time permits I'm sure I'll get back into the flow. Still one of my most favourite things to do! Although not a eulogy as such, it was a privilege to express my heartfelt gratitude to mum at her funeral, summed up in a few words, when she passed away a year ago. 💕

Hi, I feel protected supported and heard for one of the first times in my life. Taking part in the Black Women Standing in the Power and Pride Competition gave me a real boost. Thank you Sandra for the opportunity and for your inspiration and example. It would be good to share direction and support with you and fellow members. I look forward to the future. Shirley.
