When I first started doing Bible study, I thought “Everybody highlights their Bible… so I should too.” So I grabbed a yellow highlighter and went crazy. The problem Every page turned into one big yellow blur 😭 I would come back later and think Why did I highlight this What does this even mean What was I supposed to do with it So then I thought Maybe I need more colors 🎨 That looks more serious right I started highlighting anything that felt important in different colors Still no system Just vibes Months later I would open my Bible and think Why is this blue Why is this green What was I thinking here That is when I started to think 🤔 What was the purpose of me highlighting anyway And the answer I kept coming back to was this So I could come back at a different point in time and see • what was important to me • what I did not understand • where I was hearing God’s voice Once I realized that, everything changed. That is what I started to base my highlighting system on. I looked at a lot of highlighting systems, but most of them do not work across the whole Bible Some work for history books Some work for Psalms Some work for the prophets The Bible has too many different types of books for complicated systems to hold up. So I created my own system. I have been using it for the past six months, and it actually works for me in both the Old and New Testament. And it is pretty simple. 🎨 My 4 Color Bible Highlighting System The colors do NOT matter. Use whatever you want. 🍑 Peach Anything I do not understand This is my most important color No guessing. No pretending. This tells future me what I need to study more 🔵 Blue Anything about God or Jesus Promises Commands God speaking Jesus speaking 🟢 Green Connections Old Testament to New Testament Patterns Other Bible passages that relate 🟡 Yellow Anything that personally hits me Conviction Encouragement Something that speaks to where I am right now The best part Months later I can open my Bible and immediately know what I was thinking
