Need your advice on Advisory Boards
At our YouthBuild Boston board meeting next Tuesday, we plan to talk about whether to set up an advisory board for non-board members we want to engage more deeply. Do any of you have experience with advisory boards or thoughts on this? Some of the questions on my mind are: - Who should be invited and who should do the inviting? Should there be criteria for ongoing membership? - What expectations are realistic to set? How frequently should they convene? - Should a board member be the liaison or should the ED take that role since many invitees might have specific skills and knowledge the ED might want to tap into - Is the proverbial juice worth the squeeze? Any and all advice or experience would be greatly appreciated, ideally sooner rather than later. Thank you.

I've seen advisory boards used in a variety of ways, and all of them work a little different. So ultimately, the question is what is the goal. A few ways I've seen are people that have valuable expertise and experience but don't have the time and capacity to serve on the full board. Also founders that have chosen to move off the board but still want to serve in some capacity. Others, are fundraising representatives or ambassadors from specific communities. Most are volunteer roles, and I've seen some organizations pay a small annual stipend (around $1000) depending on how often they are called upon.
🤝 Where Is the Line?
In your organization, how clear is the boundary between governance and management? Be honest. - Crystal clear - Mostly clear but occasionally blurry - Frequently confusing - Depends on the situation If you’re comfortable, share one example where the line felt unclear.

This line is pretty clear. Where we struggle is between the current board and the founders of the organization.
👋 Welcome! Introduce yourself by sharing:
1) Your name & org, 2) The board you serve on, 3) One thing you wish more boards did really well.

Hi! Just jumping in. I'm Sharmon and I currently serve on the boards of Intersectional Environmentalist and One Square World. One thing I wish more boards did was adopting a more community-centered approach and inviting members from the community they served onto their boards.
