Writing a $500 premium and writing a $25,000 premium require the exact same thing.
The person sitting across from you, whether that's on the phone, Zoom, or in person, needs to like you, trust you, and believe you're doing right by them. That's it. That's the whole game. And here's what most agents miss: referrals are the natural byproduct of doing the right thing. Not a tactic. Not a script. A byproduct. But you still have to ask. And how you ask matters. The best time to ask isn't at the end when it feels awkward. It's at the beginning. Something like: "If you know anybody, a family member, a friend, a coworker, someone from your softball team, who could use someone like me, I'd really appreciate the referral. I'll always take care of them, and I know that a referral from you reflects on you." Then you ask again when you deliver the policy. " You just purchased something that's going to protect your family. If you know anyone who could use the same peace of mind, I'd love an introduction." Then you follow up, warmly, without pressure. "Do you know anybody right now, off the top of your head, who could use what I just helped you with?" Three moments. Same ask. Zero pressure. When someone does refer you, you call them back immediately. Text, email, phone, whatever. You respond fast, you use proper grammar, and you treat that referred client like gold, because that referral reflects on the person who sent them. Referrals aren't a side benefit of this business. For the agents who do it right, they become the whole business. Practice asking for referrals, make it a part of your business, and you will never need to buy leads again. Try it.

8 Tips for New Agents to Sell Insurance Successfully
Below I've compiled a list of 8 strategies every new agent needs to execute on if you want to see real success selling insurance, regardless of your agency, niche, or product. Here they are: **1. Go In With the Right Mindset** Before every call or client meeting, check your intentions. Ask yourself: how can I help this person today? How can I protect their family and fulfill a real need? You're not thinking about making a sale. You're thinking about doing the right thing. When that becomes your default, everything else follows. **2. Eliminate Distractions** Being fully focused means you can ask the right questions, take accurate notes, and give thoughtful responses. Your client will notice when you're truly present. A few ways to stay locked in: - Put your phone away during work hours. Texts and personal calls can wait. - Close out tabs and apps that have nothing to do with the call in front of you. - Prep before every appointment so you're not scrambling mid-conversation. When your client sees you're paying attention, trust builds fast. **3. Prioritize Activity Over Everything** Time is your most valuable asset when you're starting out. Use it like it matters. Don't call friends during work hours unless they're a genuine prospect. Don't browse Amazon. Don't drift. Know your presentation cold so when you're in front of a client, you're confident and clear, not fumbling through notes. Simplify your presentation. Don't overcomplicate the sale. **4. Master Your Scripts and Rebuttals** Not everyone is a scripts person, and that's okay. But you need to know your responses. When a prospect says something that doesn't add up, or pushes back, you need a calm and correct answer ready. You're not trying to win an argument. You're trying to help them get what they actually need. Know the difference. A solid foundation looks like this: - An opening that reminds the prospect why they requested information in the first place. - Fact-finding questions that uncover real needs and build genuine urgency. - Confident, clear responses to common objections. - A close that feels natural, not forced.
