Welcome
Ok. We're finally starting to get a group together. I see that there is a mixture of locksmiths, ones interested in learning the trade, and ones who are interested in the field and curious. That's great! We can share what we know, ask questions of things we don't know, and occasionally a group chat. So feel free to post whenever you like. Just keep it clean and respectful.

It's anything but consistent. One week my phone can ring off the hook, next week I hardly get a call. Competition is one factor that comes into play. I try to establish working relationships with my competitors. I have also developed regular customers. Mostly through property management companies. That helps a lot. The biggest factor is reputation. I get a lot by word of mouth as well. Facebook advertising can be cheap and get your name in the community.
LOCKSMITHING CLASSES
I’m hoping to start up classes the last half of December. If you know anyone who would be interested, please let them know about this group.

I will do one on one classes for now until I get more interest for groups.
Q&A
Check out the calendar. December 15th we’ll do a meet and greet/Q&A. I’ll be glad to answer any questions and we’ll talk about my locksmithing course. Tell anyone that may be interested.

Is a locksmith business worth it?
The short answer is yes, that is if it’s of interest to you. You don’t have to dump thousands into it to start, but you can. You can choose your specialty. I concentrate on Residential and Commercial. I also do lockouts on Residential, Commercial, and Automotive. This works for me because of the lower overhead. I don’t have a storefront, I work solely out of my truck. The amount of locksmiths around, really doesn’t matter. You find that some specialize in different things. The important thing is getting to the top of the search. Get a good tech guy to make a website and make sure you’re on the top of your potential customer’s searches. Emergency service is important. To get off the ground, you may want to consider 24 hour emergency service. This is something that a lot of locksmiths lack. They don’t want to work weekends, holidays, or go out at 2 AM. If you make yourself available, those are times that you can charge a premium. Consider joining my locksmithing classes if this sounds like something you’re wired for.

I've been a locksmith for 8 years and learned a lot on the job. My goal is to help others avoid some of the same mistakes I made.
