When meeting new a client, building rapport is always my first priority. I approach this by being authentic and intentional about creating a space where the client feels comfortable and understood. I normally ask what brings them or starting a discussion, I make a conscious effort to be transparent from the beginning by explaining the purpose of the first meeting and outlining what they can expect from our time together and answering any questions they may have. I also communicate that some sessions maybe challenging and that its okay for us talk (process) about those challenging sessions. At times, I found it helpful to tell them how I go into this work and why I do it. I find that this level of transparency helps build trust and allows clients to feel more at ease in the process. I also emphasize that the sessions are their space, one where they can speak openly and receive acceptance and support without judgment. In building this relationship, I rely heavily on reflective listening, authenticity, empathy, and summarizing. These aspects feel most natural to me and allow me to ensure that I am accurately understanding the client’s perspective while also communicating that I am fully present and engaged in what they are sharing. Reflecting and summarizing often provide additional insight into how the client views themselves, others, and the world around them. In the early stages of working with someone, I tend to draw strongly from person-centered concepts—prioritizing empathy, unconditional positive regard, and genuineness—to help establish a foundation of trust and psychological safety.
