Hi everyone! I’m Sarah, and I’m here to learn how to improve my movement patterns, and rebuild strength in my back and glutes. My imaging showed mild levoscoliosis (a left-sided lumbar curve) with a rotational component centered at L4, as well as mild scoliosis in my upper thoracic spine. I also showed degenerative changes at L5–S1, including an annular fissure and a shallow disc protrusion extending toward the left that was contacting my left S1 nerve root on MRI. My cervical imaging showed reversal of the normal cervical curve, with focal kyphosis centered at C5, as well as slight forward and backward movement of C3 relative to C4 during neck flexion and extension. My symptoms are predominantly left-sided, extending from my lower back and hip through my rib cage, shoulder blade, and neck. I also experience left-sided sciatica extending down my leg. One of the things I’m particularly interested in working through is the relationship between my sciatica, weight distribution, and glute activation. I suspect that I’ve developed a pattern of compensating for my left-sided pain by distributing more of my weight through my right side, which may be contributing to difficulty activating and strengthening my left glute. I can tell i’m compensating but am still not sure what is from the sciatica and what is from the pain of misalignment. I’ve recently started incorporating scoliosis-specific Pilates, and I’m interested in learning how to improve my pelvic stability, restore more balanced muscular recruitment, and progressively rebuild strength without aggravating my sciatica. I’m looking forward to learning from everyone and understanding how to work more effectively with my individual spinal curvature and movement patterns!
