Tap water warning...
QUOTED: The Directorate-General of Health warns of risks to water and food safety following Storm Kristin and power outages, recommending caution in consumption, food handling, and sanitation to protect public health. The DGS (Directorate-General of Health) issued a set of recommendations on Thursday night following the storm that affected several regions of the country in the early hours of Wednesday, causing power outages that persist in some areas, which could compromise the quality of drinking water and food safety. "Situations like this impact the safety of food stored in refrigerators and freezers, as well as water quality, especially in areas where the supply depends on electrical systems," the statement warns. To reduce these risks, the health authority calls for the adoption of preventive measures and safe behaviors, such as avoiding the consumption of water from sources that are not connected to the public supply network, such as wells or mines, as they may be contaminated. The DGS (Directorate-General of Health) advises the public not to drink tap water, wash food or brush their teeth with it, unless there is official confirmation of its safety, and to use bottled water whenever possible. "If you don't have bottled water, boil the water for 10 minutes before using it or disinfect it with bleach without dyes, detergents or perfumes (about 2 drops per liter of water)," he recommends, also advising the population to wash their hands well before handling treated water or food. We've found it helpful to keep a Steripen around. We've used it successfully while cycling across the Yucatán peninsula in Mexico, in Mongolia and even in the wilds of Decatur, Georgia, USA when natural disasters threatened the tap water. It's basically a black light that uses UV to purify the water, a method used in municipal water plants. Also enlivens border crossings when the mystified customs officials decide to give it a try.
Trying to get a NISS number in Portugal? Here's how some GuMPers did it...
Thanks to @Thunder Duck and @Sara Yurman for sharing their insight and experience this morning 😎 What is the NISS? More 'Portugal Essentials

And a coda to the NISS process. It turns out that the Segurança Social issues the number, but does not enter the number into its own system, at least when you get it at the Loja de Cidadão. The nice people at the Loja de Cidadão do it after you've downloaded it. At the end of the process of getting my NISS at the Loja, the lady helping me said, something like "You'll get three text messages and an email. After that come back here and we'll help you log into the social security site." It sounded like a sooth-sayer. But she was right. I got 3 text messages, telling me all my numbers were there. I opened my email and found a link to download my Comprovativo de Dados Pessoais, with the NIF, SNS number, NISS number and Foreign Identification number. Don't know what the last one is, but it's there. So then I tried to log into the Social Security site with the number. Didn't work. I indeed did have to return to the Loja. They had to redo my digital keys. So I had to arrive at the Loja with my passport, residência card, and the papers they'd given me when I applied for the NISS. I'd read about someone being asked for the original copy of their lease, so I brought it with me both times. No one ever asked for it. Anyway, after they redid my digital keys everything worked, and the NISS number could be verified on the social security site. And tomorrow I'll use it to apply for renewal of my residência.

@Debby Bradford It looks as though they studiously avoided central Portugal. If you follow the "12 places" link, the list is: - Braga - Cascais (2 locations) - Lisbon (2 locations) - Olhão - Lagos - Setúbal - Porto (2 locations) - Loures - Oeiras
Any water safety people out there?
My sister-in-law hosts a radio show and podcast focused on water safety on Kauai in Hawaii. She's looking for someone in Portugal to interview. Anybody know anyone she can interview in Nazaré or Peniche? Lifeguards, surfers, competition organizers anyone involved in water safety. If you can think of anyone please let me know.

This is the guy who started his career by winning a battle fought against his mother’s army. Very special family dynamics.
Know anything about the N2?
Our family is now committed to cycling the N2 next month. We have our basic logistics worked out. If you are familiar with the route and have any delights or cautions to share that would be wonderful. Thanks!

@António Ferreira Yup, saw that. We'll undoubtedly complain about it, but I'm sure we'll get there.
