I have two questions, one as a parent and one as a new teacher. Parent question: I have a 7 year old who is a level 1 autistic. They are fully verbal and somewhat social. We're getting good at stabilizing when overwhelm hits. But one thing I'm very worried about is how dark they get. We went through almost a year from 6 years to 7 years when they hit an overwhelm meltdown they would talk about unaliving themselves. We've had some serious talk about that and engaged therapy. They have stopped using the unaliving speak. But, the self-hatred and intensely negative self-talk is shocking. We're keeping therapy involved but we live in a rural area and specalists in autism aren't easily found here. So I'm looking for an autistic perspective. Teacher question: I'm in my final placement before graduating from teacher's college. Support in the classroom in my area is not great. Many more kids needing support than EAs to give support. Desk time is a lot for our autistic kiddos in classroom. But, letting the kiddos run around the class (because that's what they want to do) is a safety concern. What should a teacher think about to let the autistic kids have some movement when there is no EA to support and 20+ other kiddos to also manage?
