What is Biblical Counseling?
Biblical counseling is a form of counseling that relies exclusively on the Bible as the sufficient and authoritative guide for understanding human behavior, problems, and the process of change. Often described as a form of "focused discipleship," it views the human heart—rather than just the mind or environment—as the primary source of life's struggles. Unlike secular psychology, which often focuses on self-actualization or symptom relief, biblical counseling aims for spiritual transformation (sanctification) and a restored relationship with God. Core Principles · The Sufficiency of Scripture: Proponents believe the Bible contains all the necessary information to understand a person's spiritual needs and how to live in a way that honors God, regardless of circumstances. · The Role of the Holy Spirit: Real heart change is seen as a supernatural work. The counselor acts as a guide, but the Holy Spirit is considered the "Wonderful Counselor" who provides the power to change. · Heart Over Symptoms: While it acknowledges physical suffering, it emphasizes that "out of the heart come the issues of life." It seeks to address "disordered desires" and reorient them toward worshiping God. · Church-Based Care: It is typically practiced within the context of the local church rather than in a clinical, state-licensed setting.
