Cob Wall Building - Foundation Update
I'm making progress on the massive cob wall, which we'll be building during this year's in-person workshops. Check the video. I'll be posting a full foundation video soon. I used the footer/stemwall system for this one. Learn more about my upcoming workshops here: https://www.thiscobhouse.com/cob-workshops/

Hi Alex, a few questions: Are you using factory made bricks? I’m assuming the bricks won’t be visible on the outside, but is the building going to have a basement so you can see the bricks on the inside? And if the bricks are not visible on the outside why are you doing bricks instead of just concrete? When you start the walls, does the cob sit right on top of the concrete stem walls? If so, do you use a barrier? I’ll be interested to watch your progress!!

Are you going to be using all those rocks in your new home? Hopefully you send pictures as you love along. Very exciting!! 💞
One of my online students built this Cob House!
I've actually never shared these before, but one of my online students from a few years ago built her own beautiful cob house in Sri Lanka. She did an amazing job! What do you think?

That was beautiful!! 💞 Is that all we get to see?😢 That is very similar to what I was thinking as far as the walls and the stone go. I would love to hear how she did that. And what is the roof made of? Could the walls have been made smooth?
Homemade Tiles
Alex, is it possible to make my own tiles out of earthen clay? I would like to make some for a kitchen and a bathroom, if possible. If so, I would also possibly paint some of them with natural paint. Then I would probably need to put a linseed sealer on the top. Do I need to bake them? And I ask that because an earthen floor is not baked. If I had to bake them, do I need to bake/fire them at 2000 degrees? Or could I get away with a longer bake at about 800 degrees (because I have access to an oven at that temperature)? I would like to do some experiments. Thank you!!

@Alex Sumerall I do like the idea of the softness of the floor soooooo, I hope to try an experiment or two next weekend. I’ll try and take some pictures or video.

Just a quick update……. I was able to get my clay, sand, and form ready but I didn’t get a chance to make my tiles yet. The form is for 8” tiles by about 1 3/4” thick. Hopefully soon. 😊
Preview - How I built the rammed earth outdoor shower wall.
Here's a preview video. I'll be putting together a full video with design, progress photos, and instruction soon. This is footage Tal took at last year's April workshop where we did the rammed earth mixing and tamping.

I had no idea what to expect and no idea what you were doing, but that looked like a lot of work.🥵 And then……you took the form down……… now I see!! Very nice.😊
