Most of us were taught that the nervous system has two modes: calm VS stressed rest-and-digest VS fight-or-flight parasympathetic VS sympathetic But thereās a whole third state that lives underneath those: the state of shutdown. The place of numbness, fog, disconnection, scrolling, freezing, disappearing. This is one of the core things Polyvagal Theory teaches us: that our nervous system doesnāt just move between calm and stress, it moves between safety, mobilisation, and shutdown. And when we donāt know this, itās so easy to turn on ourselves, to think weāre lazy, broken, unmotivated, or not doing enough.
