What are you reading?
Sure, this is a writing community; but dedicated writers are always reading. What am I reading? To my daughter (who is almost 6): - First: Doctor Who and the Runaway Tardis - Next: 4 pages of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban each night - After that: Some combination of Goodnight books (Goodnight Lab, Goodnight Unicorns, and/or Goodnight Moon) For myself? I'm bouncing around. - Notes from Underground by Fyodor Dostoevsky (great ideas for character flaws and uncomfortable emotions) - The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli (great for tactical thinking and understanding motives) - Various cooking/baking recipes (great for structure and rooting myself in the tangible world) - Dead Space: Martyr by B. K. Evenson (writing genre research; SciFi Horror) Your turn. What are you reading and why, and/or what's your favorite book(s) and why?

✍️ I'm Writing My Memoir Raw. Unedited. Honest.
I'm writing I Escaped Hollywood, Barely differently than I thought I would. I'm not polishing every chapter before moving on. I'm not stopping every few paragraphs to make the writing perfect. Instead, I'm writing the memories exactly as they come. Some chapters are messy. Some are funny. Some are painful. Some are unbelievable. They're also completely out of order. One moment I'm a teenage model in Japan during the 1980s, trying to navigate a culture and career that changed my life. The next, I'm standing on a Hollywood set wondering how I got there. I'm choosing to capture the memories while they're alive instead of interrupting them with editing. The editing can come later. Right now, I'm chasing truth. My hope is that when you read these stories, you'll feel like you're right there with me—experiencing the glamour, the culture shock, the excitement, the loneliness, the opportunities, the mistakes, and everything in between. Because this memoir isn't about celebrity. It's about survival. It's about growing up in extraordinary places while trying to figure out who I was. And above all, it's about telling the story honestly. Sometimes the most powerful stories aren't perfectly written first—they're simply written before they're forgotten. ❤️📖✨

Wow, I like the integration of AI scenes; though I admit, I'm more looking forward to reading how the story unfolds. The more I hear about your story, the more it makes me curious about the character depth and development. After all, the journey, and especially transformation, are more important than the destination.

@Bert Russell Wow, I like your pacing as the story progressed, taking a sharp turn down the dark path. I appreciate how real this is, especially from the first person perspective. It's far more relatable that way, and makes a profoundly deeper impact. I could feel the blows from the bat just reading them. Amazing work!

*As a continuation from the "Will the rain ever stop" prompt: "Don't move..." A silky whisper caressed Leila's ear. She whipped around, seeing no one nearby. "Don't move... wait..." it whispered again, the book in her hands vibrating, stirring a new scent of raspberry and rum. Seconds later, a trail of liquid black fog formed, accompanied by silver wisps and eerie theremin notes, following the woman who dropped the book. The fog spread, quickly encompassing the street corner; the once solid lines defining structures loosened into waves of silver wisps like reality coming undone. Leila gasped as she began floating, weightless, until the force of a large invisible hand wrapped around her. WHOOSH! She was pulled into a large dark room. If not at least for the rectangular outline of flowing wisps forming a room of 50 meters long by 30 meters wide and 30 meters tall, her panic would have been entirely paralyzing. WHOOSH! The grip pulled her again through a similar room, except filled with several large bubbles. In each, different places, different events, different smells and feelings. Despite this, she still clutched the book to her chest like a lifeline. Her feet finally settled onto solid ground, despite the continued darkness. Silver wisps illuminated a crude sidewalk before her. "Walk..." the voice came again. Step. Step. Step. The further she walked, the more she heard disembodied breaths until a pale yellow light shined on her from above. When she looked up, it followed her like an eye, silver wisps forming a large crude door... no... more like the folds of an enormous cloak. Large pitch black hands with 3 elongated fingers formed with wisps, pulling the cloak open. The path continued through it to a suspended island over a glossy black sea, held by a network of cables; pulsing with currents like synapses. In the center of the biomechanical control panel was a space perfectly fitting the book. "Put me there..." the voice commanded. Her hands shaking, reluctant to give up her lifeline, Leila placed the book. Several clasps gripped it with more elongated fingers.
Third Step
Well, because the level 3 notice told me to... I'm sharing the first scene from the first chapter of what used to be the first book of the SciFi > Horror > Mystery > Coming-of-Age series I'm working on. It's now the second book, but the one I've put the most work into (around 40k words so far). All constructive feedback welcome. *I'm using ' to reflect the character's thoughts (Skool won't copy over italicized font). Derek’s silent tears rolled over his dirt-crusted cheeks in the defiled valley, where savage moonlight glinted off flame-charred trees; monoliths of sorrow mourning their fallen brethren. A cruel breeze whipped his eyes while gazing wearily at the nearby Aspens. Their quaking clusters of golden leaves an omen of pointless hope before devastation revisits the Sierra-Nevada foothills. 'At least as a colony they have each other… but they’re just kids, like me.' Grim as it was, it’s the only place Derek found solace when he could escape the compound. He knew it was dangerous – both if discovered, and the risks of being in such a place. It’s illegal to teach one of his social stature any skills of self-sufficiency… or at least it was. 'The war is finally over, but Lilith’s Defiance is defunct now. What’s going to happen to us? Will anything get better? Maybe I’ll finally get a toy! I guess people found a way after the last two World Wars. Maybe we will, too…' The crystal pulsed in his filthy shaking hands. 'Weird… it happened again…' It was the third time a glint of light shone from the crystal. Mistaken moonlight was an easy assumption… but moonlight isn’t purple. He clutched it to his chest, twisting tears trailing to his lips again as he shook his head. 'Why can’t you be here, Dad?! Why do I have to fight so hard to get anything of yours?! This is ALL I have left since losing you to the raiders, but if mom found out I took it…' The crystal pulsed again, now with bass reverberating through him. He couldn’t ponder on it long before a bright light focused on him.

@Christa Karim Thank you so much, Christa! I did worry it might be too heavy and possibly in need of a trigger warning, but I also wanted it to feel as real and grounded as possible. I'm flattered you'd like to read more; I'll have to edit a bit more first lol.
Do you guys write your stories in order, or do you jump around? 🤔
I like to start from the beginning. I enjoy letting the story unfold to me as I’m writing; sometimes I don’t know what’s going to happen until it happens 😄. A friend of mine jumps around with her stories, usually writing from the climax, then back to the beginning, then finishing. So I was just curious what everyone else’s preference is. 😊

@Cristal Vancarson This! This is how it comes to me as well. I don't want to lose the inspiration moment. Editing is for the valley between peaks, imo.

@Cristal Vancarson Much appreciated, but I can't claim concept originality haha. I owe that to Alyssa Matesic, John BookFox, and Abbie Emmons
