Some of us are sitting on the sidelines, waiting for the perfect moment. You’re telling yourself that you’ll finally open the Classroom and start building once you have more money, more time, or more confidence. I want to share a quick story about a man named Jan Koum. In the early 1990s, Jan was a 16-year-old immigrant living in a small apartment paid for by government assistance. His family was so broke that he had to stand in line at a local social services office just to collect food stamps so they could eat. He didn't have capital. He didn't have an elite business degree. He didn't have investor connections. Do you know what he did have? Hunger and access to information. Jan went to second-hand bookstores, bought used manuals on computer networking, taught himself the skills step-by-step, and returned the books when he was done reading them. He didn't wait for permission. He didn't complain about his lack of resources. He focused entirely on becoming skilled. Years later, using those exact self-taught skills, he built a simple messaging app called WhatsApp. In 2014, Meta bought that app for $19 billion. When Jan signed that multi-billion dollar contract, he didn't do it in a corporate skyscraper. He walked right up to the door of the social services building where he used to wait in line for food stamps, signed the documents on the front door, and walked away.
