Trail Tip Tuesday 🥾
Today's tip is for wood processing. Some of the more seasoned outdoors-people in the group will likely already know this tip but I thought it useful for those beginning to build their confidence. Having systems in place is really useful for building confidence outdoors. It settles the mind, give purpose and strategy to tasks that when starting, may feel overwhelming. 3-4 piles is the top tip today - more on it below 👇🏼 Drop a 🌲 in the comments if you use this method 👇🏼

Over the last several years, due to increased wildfire risk, I've taken to ensuring that my adventures are near a body of water so that if I do decided to build a small cook fire to save stove fuel, can do two things, 1. dig a hole in the wet sand to act as a fire pit, and 2, ensure I have an ample supply of water to drown my fire.
Wednesday's Genius or Gimmick
If we're being honest, we all had that 1 "survival skill' we heard in a movie, that we believed was true until we became more experienced: which one was yours? 1. Follow a river downstream if you're lost The theory: water leads to towns. The reality: it often leads to gorges, cliffs, and worse terrain than where you started. SAR pros usually say stay put instead. 2. Cotton kills Wet cotton loses insulation and stays wet, so hypothermia risk goes up. True in cold, wet conditions — a little less relevant on a dry summer day hike. 3. Suck the venom out of a snakebite Straight out of old Westerns. Doctors have been saying for decades this does nothing and can make things worse. Get help. Don't do this. 1. something else

I went with cotton kills because I have seen people get seriously injured after becoming hypothermic and losing the ability to walk reliably or use their hands to steady themselves. Nobody actually died, but in every case they were wearing some sort of "high performance outdoor gear" that actually contributed to the hypothermia.

When I started this community, I built it for people who love the outdoors and want more from it. That hasn't changed — but something's been on my mind. For every one of us out there enjoying it, there's someone stuck at the front door. Someone who's never started, or who lost their outdoor life to injury, burnout or just... life, and can't find the way back. I was that person once. I didn't knwo how to get started, then ended up in a career instructing and coaching. Then in 2023 I had my first child and suffered from PND and loss of identity - I had to work hard to get back the confidence I had when outdoors. So from this month, Recalibrate Outdoors is officially for them too — and I'm opening a small number of 1-1 coaching spots to walk that journey with people personally. Nothing changes for you except this: you're now the welcome party. If you know someone who keeps saying 'I really should get outdoors more' — send them here. And if part of that story sounds like you, my door's open. 💬 Hope you guys can get behind this - it's about educating and supporting others

we actually have a group of ATV enthusiasts here who have modified their units so they can accommodate persons with mobility challenges. Apparently they have regular free for all rides where they take groups of folks out for ATV trail rides, do hotdog and sausage roasts and just generally get folks with physical limitations outdoors.
Monday Gear Chat 🎒
Today I'm chatting stoves. I happened to have 2 out with me, so thought I'd stop to give a quick chat about them. There are plenty of others out there, this is just what I had with me for covering some stove work with the young people. What you use will come down to preference, weight in your pack, number of days, number of people and what you plan to cook. Jetboil Minimo and the Trangia solo stove are the two in my little video. I'll pop links to them in the comments if you'd like to check them out further. 📊 If you had to choose between these two, which would you choose & Do you have a favourite stove? and why? 👇🏼

I'm partial to my Brunton gear, which is sadly no longer available. Both my cookstove and lantern are incredibly compact. Both are so compact that I can store them both in my mess kit. I do however, only use them in situations where I can't use my tripod triangle to cook over an open fire.

@Lisa O'Brien they focus mostly on compasses/transits now... my raptor stove and Lucy lantern are probably close to 20 years old

@Leonora Cordelia Soon, I figure I need about 2 more days. Today I got homes assigned to more of my tools, got the welder and plasma cutter into position, and got some random fasteners sorted by size while I was doing some clean up.
